This is my first outboard motor and it wont turn off when I turn the key. What could be wrong with it.

What year or model is your motor. The kill method is different for some 25's.

Is your black and yellow wire on your engine disconnected?

Re: HELP! 25 hp johnson wont turn off

I am unsure on the year. The black and yellow wire looks to be connected.
The man I bought the boat from said it had a part that needed to be replaced, but I could just choke the motor to turn it off. Choking the motor doesn't seem to work very well. Any ideas on what that part may be?

Is it still running? That would be a real pain. :)

I just found out that the model year is 1983. Any more ideas?

Hi. Do you guys think the service manual would help me trouble shoot the problem? Thanks for the advise.

Re: HELP! 25 hp johnson wont turn off

That motor should have a black w/yellow stripe wire from the powerpack. Anytime this wire is shorted to ground, or to a wire that's connected to ground, it kills the engine. Usually this wire is connected to an "M" terminal on your ignition switch. A black ground wire is connected to the other "M" terminal. When the key is turned off, the two "M" terminals are shorted together, thereby killing the engine. (Also, there can be a lanyard safety switch in the circuit that does the same thing.) Somewhere, one of those two wires is not completing the circuit, i.e. broken, disconnected, etc.

It's probably your emergency ignition cutoff switch inside your control box.
You can do a preliminary test with an ohmmeter before having to disassemble. It's all in the manual.;)

Re: HELP! 25 hp johnson wont turn off

I know this is an old post but i have the same problem with my motor. i think it is a bad key switch. I just bypassed it by running a wire through a switch to ground like a seperate cut off switch. had an exra one in the dash i wasnt using so it didnt cost me anything but a couple feet of wire
