Re: Help choosing a gun

Hmmm home defense, a small shotgun or like a 9mm or 45 pistol would do the trick. I know there is a lot out there to choose from( i own several rifles myself) I something today that spiked my attention. rossi has come out with thier version of the judge. Its a short stocked rifle, with a 18 or 20 inch barrel, chambered in the 45 colt, and the .410. Its a six shot revolver, now that would be a interesting home defense weapon. Just in case the gun nuts here were wondering, I got a .270, .243, 3 .22 rifles, 2 .50cal muzzle loaders, .410 shotgun, and 2 pistols. I think by jersey standards, i would be a threat lol

Re: Help choosing a gun

Mossberg 12 ga w/ 18 and 28 " barrels, then maybe a 9mm Browning semiauto?

this is the exact kit that I'm looking at...

Third time... I'm limited by NJ to rifles and shotguns. I'm going to look tomorrow and the local gun shop and hopefully I'll find something.

Do I really need the home defense barrel? I've been thinking baout it and i'd never shoot it recreationally and I'd have to change it every time I went trap shooting... and if someone breaks into my house... I think a 28" barrel, while harder to maneuver, would blow away any intruder... right? I'd save 200 bucks...

Man your so young its funny! what a silly question, "Do I really need ....." the answer to that is OF COURSE YOU DO, not really but were all guys here so as long as a woman doesn't chime in were ok, here is a great question for you as a novice to ask us as gun owners,

To everyone who has posted here,
How many guns do you have, and so that we don't get into the "nobody needs to know" ideology I will ask for one of two answers,

one

or more then one.

Zopperman I realize your only 20, but gun owners are nothing more then big kids, I don't know any other gun owner that owns just one gun, and I am part of several gun clubs, I am also part of several police oriented motorcycle clubs so its safe to say I know a huge amount of gun owners. Gun Owners don't buy just one gun, they may purchase one at a time but never own only one, they may tell you the government only knows about one gun but they have more, we all know it but the government doesn't need to know it, I am that way, the government only knows about my 7mm magnum Ruger Hawkeye I bought new, I have a Concealed Handgun Permit but you know what? Its kinda hard to carry my hunting rifle concealed even if I am above average in height!

The answer to the "do I really need" question is probably not, as an experienced gun owner I would like you to have a home defense gun, a personal defense handgun and a backup handgun, a close quarters battle rifle, and a mid range battle rifle. this should complete your personal defense/home defense basic needs for the urban home. Then you begin with backups or toys, if you live in the country then you may think about longer range guns for that "reach out and touch somebody ideology"! Most gun owners do not like to have one gun that can have a switchable barrel when one purpose is home defense because its simply better to have one at home ready to go and another that you grab to go playing, 2 are better then 1 but in your situation with limited resources the combo is better then nothing, plus the combo is a good setup to take camping and playing.

So think about it this way, did you really need that 03 4runner with a V8? or would a V6 done the job just fine? you would probably answer with Why not! And there is your answer!

I have to warn you though, once you go down this path there is typically no turning back!! 1 gun turns into 4, 4 into 10, next thing you know you buy a gun safe, then another and so on! Its probably an addiction, but I'm ok with it!!

If you shoot an intruder make sure they are dead, put knife in hand, then they tell no tales. The family would not have a lawsuit, and there would be no trial. Oh make sure you tell the cops you feared for you life.

Lipp, that post really cracked me up :D
If only money and laws would permit...

Well, today I stumbled on a mossberg model 88 combo... 24" rifled barrel and 28" smooth for trap/skeet.. Came with a scope, 2 chokes and a choke tool. I bought it for 300 and a case and cleaning kits and a trigger lock for another 55. :D

It kicks like a mule.

One question though...

You paid for a trigger lock? Your Local Police Department probably gives them away for free you know?

I;ve been researching and it seems like it's just a mossberg 500 but made in mexico :)mad:) either way, I'm excited to go to the trap range this week :D

You can't get a class 3 in NJ...

I went semi-private sale... as in used, but through a local shop as a third party which was probably more expensive but it has a warranty and the people there are incredibly nice. :D

Your right, just like you said you can't buy a handgun, which is also wrong, Don't believe what you read, get into the culture and find the truth that will set you free. You have to understand that in this path you will find yourself questioning what the media and your local government like to say, there is always a legal way, it is your constitutional right, all they can do is make it the hardest thing you could possibly ever do.

I can't tell you this enough, do not believe everything you hear, investigate it yourself, handguns, automatic rifles, automatic handguns, suppressors, Tanks and F-18's there is always a LEGAL way. The sad part is that most of the time money is the difference, Did you know that the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms originated from the IRS? The simplistic explanation being that they needed a separate arm to collect taxes on Firearms, Moonshine and Tobacco, The stamp required for Class 3 firearms is a tax!

Your young Bud educate yourself!

Mods if this is too Political please accept my apologies and feel free to delete.

Re: Help choosing a gun

Pretty good for a first timer, I think! I got 8/20 on trap and 17/25 on skeet... but I found the trap more fun. I'm going again this afternoon while the epoxy soaks into my panels...

Re: Help choosing a gun

Ok On a more serious note... JRJ has a great idea .. I personally shoot an a trap league 8 months a year once a week at The West End Gun Club... Its just like a bowling or volleyball or any other funsy competitive league. Its great fun[ its a handicap league, so ya dont have to be a ace shot to be in competition. A box of shells and 25 clays at the club cost about $16.. Its my nite out w da boys...
A deer rifle... IE 30.06 Is more for hunting, Its alot harder to find a place to shoot em , as they are dangerous for like 3 miles. And [IMHO] they arent that much fun to shoot, as they kick like a mule. Much more technical. ya try to get a small group on a piece of paper, boring, shooting clays is way more fun, things blow up, moving targets etc Deer rifles Not good for home defense either as stated earlier Ya pull the trigger on that, the bullet can go thru the intruder, 4 walls and into the bedroom of a neighbor. Shotgun for home defense over a rifle anyday[ Handgun the best, but ONLY for self def really, Just a few thoughts 4 ya...

+1!!! Trap and Skeet are two of my favorite things to do. And a gun club or game and fish range is the way to go. You can learn alot and figure out what type of shooting you really want to do.
