Re: Help choosing a gun

I bought a 5 pack of rifled buck shot with the gun that I'm keeping under my bed.. I had some concern keeping it loaded... YD, do you have a trigger lock on it loaded? or just the safety? GOd forbid I ever need it, I want to be ready to go, but at the same time, I don't want any accidents...

No trigger lock..

No safety ..

When I grab a gun..its loaded and ready. There is no "load the chamber" .. its fire.

Accidents happen when people/kids are not schooled on firearms. My Whole family can take apart our guns behind their backs ( for the CZ75 literally behind their backs .. unloaded of course lol ).

When the kids were Kiddies .. yes I locked them with a trigger lock and put them in a combo safe.

Now All of my guns are ready.

( N. Detroit area here ) ..

IMO.. If you point a loaded gun in self defense .. you pull the trigger ( for females you should shoot until the clip or round is gone ) Men you have 3 shots .. make them good and better make sure they fall INSIDE your door..with a weapon of some kind ..

Im getting somewhat out of my realm here.. so I will stop here ..

Re: Help choosing a gun

When I bought the gun last week I sat down with my parents (the only other people I live with) and showed them how it works (they were both mildly opposed to my purchase) but I still don't feel comfortable without the lock. I do have a key near by and a shell in the tube. I think I'm going to keep it like that till they both agree to go to the range with me one day and I know that they know how to safely handle it...

Also, I switched to a choke with the gas vent holes on it and experienced significantly less recoil and I shot 36/50.. I'm getting better :D

Re: Help choosing a gun

ok you live with mom and dad which is fine but its their rules, Once you get your own place I want you to think of this scenario,

you wake up in the middle of the night, and someone is in the house, what do you do?

or

You are awakened in the middle of the night to someone attempting to get into your house, what do you do?

You can go through the news paper or the internet and find stories of victims or near victims and place yourself in their shoes, what do YOU do? Believe it or not, this is training, training in its simplest form. The one thing I want you to know, is that 99% of all gun owners don't start these scenario's with UNLOCK THEIR GUN!! You don't feel safe without the gun lock? I understand but I think the more realistic scenario for you is that your gun will remain locked until you get home, a much more responsible ideology, but you need to grow a little bit, one step at a time.

Re: Help choosing a gun

Just jumped on this thread - and tried to catch up: congrats on the purchase zopperman. A 12 is a great first gun, and very versatile. Short barrel indoor for home protection - you can load with some buck shot, or there are various other "home defense" loads out there. Don't be afraid of things like the bean bag or pepper loads. They are technically non-lethal, but anytime you're confronted with an intruder they are semi-pro or lower and a 12 gauge shooting potpurri will do the trick. There's a great story in TN here from a few weeks ago where an 80 (I think) y.o. woman fended off some baddies with dove loads - shot them dead in the face, and they had to spend the next several hours with the police at the hospital picking shot out of their cheeks.

Long barrel will be good for hunting, and as someone mentioned with the right slug and and a good long barrel you can make a 100 yard shot with a shot gun. I've got a Mossberg setup kinda' like yours.

I'll add this in, because I have kids and don't like leaving loaded easy access guns around (though i have a couple that I can assemble FAST). There is no better home defense than a dog. I'm a gun guy (have six of 'em, and a permit to carry a handgun) and I like to shoot. However, I've lived in Detroit proper (27 years) and know inner city livin'. A visible dog - preferably over 60lbs with a good bark to them - wether their friendly or mean will make ANY intruder - pro/semi-pro/run-of-the-mill hoodlum - think twice about taking the next step. Additionally, something easy to grab and swing -- baseball bat/club/pipe -- stragically located throughout the house will also help anytime you have someone unwanted inside. Guns are not the only solution - and depending on the house, and how close your neighbors are they can be a bad solution to home defense.

That said - I have gotten my hands on a couple of 12 gauge rounds that "the guy" said were for home defense. Bird shot mixed with phosphorus -- touch it off and you get the bird shot pipper and about 12 feet of flame. I've shot one outside ... WOW:eek: ... can't imagine the guy would keep coming at that round. Of course, your curtains are burnin' too :D

Be safe, be careful, have fun and I hope you never need to use a home defense weapon.

Re: Help choosing a gun

I'd buy a gunsafe. You can get a $99 keylock and lagbolt it into a closet wall or get a bigger combo type. No triggerlock and you won't find your own pointed at you so easy. I had one breakin where they tried pulling gunsafe off the wall, Another they beat the snot out of my 100lb lab. If I was home, I'd have had time to dial 911 on my celphone and pull shotgun out of safe.

Re: Help choosing a gun

And there's nothing wrong with that ideology Dave, I just prefer to remove the intruder from the planet before I have to wait four minutes for the police to arrive. I keep my handguns on my nightstand with my flashlight, shotgun is under my bed, where is my phone? I don't care it's not time for that yet, the situation has yet to be resolved. Remove the threat, call the police. Or you can call the police and likely be a victim and the police come screaming in 4 minutes later to render you aid.

I can see it now your going to confront an intruder and then ask him to wait for one second while you go back to your room, you forgot your keys....

People ask me all the time why I carry a gun, I tell them because cops are to heavy. Cops fight crime they can not always stop it, Responsible Gun owners that carry may die protecting themselves but they most likely have also killed the criminal that attempted to make them a victim. TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN and then TRAIN SOME MORE!! Ever wonder why cops do a pretty good job at what they do? they train!!

My answer to that question has lately been that "I am too old to take a beating and too young to die"

Re: Help choosing a gun

I am a huge outdoorsman, boats, hunting, fishing, trap shooting. I am also in law enforcement and did a few tours overseas. With all this being said the military uses the 5.56mm round which is equal to a .223cal. leading it to be a small but very deadly round. However, you probably don't want to spend the money on the guns to fire those rounds or the ammo. In all honesty I will say my first shot gun was given to me by my father-in-law it was a really nice Mossberg 500 combo. It came with a short 24" rifled barrel for slugs with a nice 5x scope, and deer hunting, and a longer 28" smooth barrel for shot. I use both barrels' my rifled for deer season, the smooth for trap shooting, and waterfowl. Great combo really reliable (Mossberg 500 is the current standard issue shotgun for the military, and many police departments) and shoot on target every time. With my 24" barrel and Hornady slugs I reach well past 175 yards to drop a deer. Pretty impressive for a shotgun if you ask me.

Re: Help choosing a gun

there is just so much you can do with guns. I grew up in Arkansas and did a lot of hunting. Mostly duck. I then moved to Texas and although i live in the burbs of houston, i still have a few of my guns. One of them is a mossberg 500 which i have modified recently into a home defense gun.

I would love to pick up a 10/22, and a 9mm or 40cal handgun soon. (that is my wife in the pics.. not me)

Re: Help choosing a gun

Sorry I haven't had a chance to reply, I've been busy with the boat..

jamerson -- sounds exactly like my set up.. I can't wait for turkey season!!

Thanks for the info southkogs :D I have a 120 pound bernese mountain dog, but he would want an intruder to scratch his belly before he attacked them... and if anyone ever touched my dog, oh man would I be quick to shoot them...

and Lipp -- you're right, but at the same time my parents don't mind however I keep it.. It's under my bed right now, I put 5 rounds in teh tube (after i heard of more break ins) and I think I'm going to keep the safety on and just have to pump once and be ready to go.. I told my parents and they really didn't care eitehr way lol they said as long as it's safe they don't mind. I'd love to have a gun at school with me... my house is in a shady area in philly... lot of breaks ins ETC. but Philly doesn't recognize the second amendment so a baseball bat will have to do for now... I had a weird experience with some weird car driving by my house a few times last night and being REALLY sketchy and I just slept better knowing that my gun was ready to gun and easily accessible for me.

Beason, that is too cool. I was looking at one of those fold over stocks with teh shell holder on the side and one of those cool gun lights...

Lets talk in 5 years, I bet your thoughts will have changed quite a bit! I know mine did.

Remember put yourself in situations and solve them, as long as you educate yourself that's all I ask.

Re: Help choosing a gun

Being in NJ makes it rough , but first should be the pump shotgun,18 to 20 inch barrel,5 shot max in NJ, otherwise and lt`s an illegal weapon.
Lever actions, 38/357, 45LC, 44 Mag 10rd capacity
.30 Carbine with 30rd jungle clips, but again ILLEGAL IN nj
All the good stuff is illegal here.

Been a Life member here for a long time. Up to you to decide how much defending your rights is worth to you.

You already live in a state that apparently doesn't understand "shall not be infringed", how much else are you willing to let them take away from you?
