Oh so your gonna go there are a you!

Yes I am an NRA member...And a GOA member and a RMGO member, And I couldn't have said it any better then 45Auto, it all depends on how much you value your gun rights.

Have any of you got an NRA membership? Is it worth it?

Since 1964 and for as long as I live. How much are your rights worth? The magazine (AMERICAN RIFLEMAN) is worth the cost of membership is you want to learn more about firearms.

Well, that answers that. What kind of benefits does it offer? besides the insurance stuff.. I don't really care about that, I'm more concerned about the whole rights issue. Is it basically a donation to keep them fighting behind the scenes or is it more visible if I get a membership?

Re: Help choosing a gun

You are paying the NRA or GOA or whom ever to fight for your rights, visit their website www.nra.org, http://gunowners.org/, or your local gun organization, it costs huge money to support your rights, The NRA/GOA fights the Federal Government at every turn, its money well spent. I would highly recommend you join the local organization as well so that they can fight for you on a local basis. Some Gun Clubs require NRA membership to be a part of their club. There are between 80-100 MILLION gun owners in America no one really knows in fact I think even 100 million is low but doesn't it seem ironic that there are so many gun owners and yet the Government still wants to limit law abiding citizens the rights the Constitution Guarantees? With out these organizations things would most likely be much worse...

Both the NRA and GOA have fought the government to the United States Supreme Court and WON. The NRA is more political where as the GOA is NO COMPROMISE. I support both.

Re: Help choosing a gun

I gave up my NRA membership over the 1 rule that isn't right. I live 1/2 east of Camp Perry on Lake Erie for which they close when Camp Perry closes for shooting. This is public water under DoD control, they hold the National Riffle, and Pistol Matches at Camp Perry every year but if you are not a NRA member you can't shoot. Just not right, and they have yet to change this rule which leaves out many good shooters.

Re: Help choosing a gun

as a man, you should have a 1911 .45acp pistol. Rock Island makes decent ones for under 600$, also you should have a 12 gauge.

... JPFO is a better organization I think... than the NRA

What is JPFO? Why do you think it's better? Well, I think I said it a few times earlier in the thread, but in NJ I can't get a pistol till I'm 21.. but I did get a 12 gauge... am I man yet?

JPFO is Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership. One of the best organizations out there defending the second amendment.

If you're not familiar with history, in World War 2 the Germans killed about 6 million unarmed Jews (men, women, & children) by execution, gas chambers, etc. A lot of the survivors decided they wouldn't be unarmed the next time some government decided what was best for them .....

well done Man, you're on the way to complete enlightenment.

.45acp, 12 gauge, 4x4 truck, wife, child ,home..... a boat is also a key factor in obtaining manhood. :)

you did mention 30.06 in your post and I want to commend you on a manly caliber. Centerfire Systems is selling Springfield 1903's for 750$.... anyone who sees you with this rifle would surely recognize you as true blue man man :)

That's awesome. What an organization... My family escaped the holocaust in Poland in the 40's... I'm definitely going to be looking into this one too..

Well, I have a 12 gauge, 4x4, a serious girlfriend, hopefully no child, and a boat! I'm well on the way lol. I can't wait to get a pistol!! There will be another thread about that on August 7th of next year... my 21st! :D

Re: Help choosing a gun

Well, I understand that people don't want guns on school campuses, but I don't understand why Philadelphia refuses to issue gun permits to civilians.. I'm living off campus this year in a relatively sketchy area and I'd have liked to have had my gun with me.. In addition, I'd love to be able to go trap shooting on teh weekends and stuff and everywhere local to philly won't rent a gun... just my thoughts... I did have a great first few days of school though :D

Re: Help choosing a gun

Regarding Philadelphia, they are violating state law by refusing to issue carry permits and harassing gun owners who are acting within the law. Inasmuch as they get away with it, the fat lady has not yet sung.

I was in the same shoes about 10 years ago getting into firearms as a young adult, and after all this time a pump action shotgun is one of my favorites, and one that I am the most confident handling in an emergency. Just get familiar with it, and practice enough that you enjoy your results, and the recoil won't mean a darn thing to you.

As far as other stages, that will depend a lot on what you plan to do in the shooting sports. Ie whether hunting is in the picture or not. I got into firearms long before getting into hunting, and my tastes leaned a certain way. Then I went hunting, the tastes started leaning another way, and I realized that a lot of skills from hunting, not to mention using the same firearms, would benefit home defense and homeland defense (both of which are founding reasons for the RKBA). Then I got into a full time career and found that I just wasn't going to be able to hunt anywhere near as much as I hoped, and needed to keep things simpler in order to be the slightest bit competent at anything. And then I bought my first boat.

As far as starting a functional collection, a shotgun, rifle and 22 is a good core - if you're going to hunt, make it a bolt action, if not, a semi-auto. If hunting is in the mix, a full power bolt action (ie 30-06, 270, 308, etc) is good to get early on while you still have the youthful resilience to get accustomed to the recoil and the ability to get accustomed to the mechanical aspects. If hunting is solidly not in the mix, just save up for a high quality, accurate 308 semi-auto such as an AR-10 or equivalent. Trust me, just save and then go full bore, don't ever buy anything "to tide you over". That being said, don't think as a beginner that you need a high grade item to get all the accuracy that you're probably not capable of. Ie don't get a $2k Les Bauer AR-15, start with a $600-700 used Bushmaster (if you're going that route at all.)

Re: Help choosing a gun

Zopperman - best wishes in school and in Philly.

I just got caught up reading the thread - I think I'm even a real man, who knew!?! - if you're getting into shooting beyond home protection (which I'm pretty sure was your original reason), allow me to make a suggestion: get a .22 target pistol. They're not terribly expensive, and there are a bunch of ways to compete with them. They are also cheap to shoot - meaning you can shoot a lot. Practice is what makes perfect, and the more you shoot the better you get - the same principals apply to shooting any gun (rifles, shotguns & handguns). There are differences, and some are significant (a .45 ACP doesn't shoot like a .22) but the general stuff is worth the time put in behind the .22. I know you said you can't purchase a handgun until you're 21 in NJ (Excuse me for a moment - "Thank you God for allowing me to move to Tennessee, Amen"), but you might be able to purchase a .22 target gun - check your laws carefully.

When you can, make your way down to TN we got some stuff down here that's easy to rent and shoot - I've shot the MP5, Tompson, Barrett (they build them minutes from my house), CAR15, AK47, AR15, etc., etc. ... you need a trip down here sometime.

Re: Help choosing a gun

I'm very happy with the gun :D
Sorry for the delay... I've been busy busy at school...

Lipp -- I heard about that! I wish it would rally some political change... I don't know what that kid had to do to get his permit... I'm a few miles from Temple (at Upenn in west philly) and we have our share of shootings and such. I brought my truck to school this year and I'm almost afraid to leave it on the street... I'm thinking of buying another security device like a steering club or something.

Southkogs -- thanks for the kind wishes :) TN sounds like some fun! we're a bit too stuffy up here in the NE. I shot a 9mm SMG at a range here in PA once, but it was incredibly expensive... and I'm on the "ramen and water" diet now... I'm a little jealous

I got all my NRA stuff today and the letter from the president was really worth it. I'm glad to know my money is going to the right place... I',m already thinking about my pistol purchase next august!!

I'm kind of late to the thread as well, and also a Tennessean. We are indeed blessed to live in this state. I regularly carry my 1911-A1 in Condition 1. Z, we welcome you to the fold. Do NOT be a sheep. Be a Sheepdog. Google it. :)
I will not set foot in your state, or IL or NY. I just don't buy the fear mongering up there and the taxes are unreal. And what's up with not being able to pump your own gas? OMG!
