I have a late 80's johnson 60 hp. Last Sunday geting ready to put the boat on the trailer it wouldn't start. I found the neg battery cable had broke. A 20 amp fuse on the left side of the motor was also blown. I replaced the cable and fuse and when I turned the key on the alarm went of and starting smoking. I have constant power from the purple wire at the alarm with the key on. What does this go to, and what else did I fry. Also the brown wire was not contected to the alarm, isn't it supposed to be?

Purple wire to the alarm is always hot. The circuit that turns the alarm on is the ground side. The brown wire I believe is your neutral safety switch

I'm really lost now. The alarm only has two wires, the purple wire and a ground straight to the case. When I turn the key on the alarm goes off and starts glowing and smoking. I disconected the purple wire and got the motor started. It definitely isn't charging. Could the recitifier being fried cause this. If I don't figure this out soon I might have to row it out and pull the plug.

Laker....there are two different types of alarm indicators. The original was a vibrating buzzer type horn which was replaced by an electronic tone type alarm.

The buzzer type only had two wires going to it. The tan wire which came from the engine and a black which went to ground. This buzzer has a round body and may be metal or the later ones used plastic. This one should NOT have a purple wire going to it.

The tone module would have a double purple wire going to the plus spade, a tan wire going to the other spade and a ground coming from the module itself. The shape of the module is a little strange...round horn with a square module attached is the best I can describe it.

The tone modules will go bad. If you have a module, it's possible it went straight to ground and popped the ignition fuse on the engine. It's also possible with the buzzer type.

If your not sure about the recifier, pull it off and test it. Yours should have one red and two yellow wires. You can test the rectifier with an ohm meter. Your manual will tell you how.

Keep us posted as to what you find....thanks.

hello
by the late 8o's it wont matter which horn you have you will have a purple key on positive and a tan alarm switch wire. if you have the selftest module horn it will also have a ground wire. both horns were failure prone especially in a lack of maint condition.
good luck and keep posting

Well it looks like it's not as bad as I thought. The rectifier tests good, had the dealer test it too just to be sure. The alarm module is all that is fried. Should have the new one Sat AM. Will get it hooked up right this time. The tan wire wasn't even hooked up. I had put a new battery in it so it didn't read as charging but is when it needs to. Thanks for your help.
