Hello Folks,
I found this older Evinrude for sale awhile back and decided to buy it. However I can use some help with it. I looked in the Sticky page to try and find the year and HP of this motor. If I looked it up right I believe it to be a 1953 7.5…please correct me if I am wrong.
The motor looks to be all original except for the paint on the gas tank. I am missing the cap for the gas tank and the recoil spring for the pull rope needs to be replaced. Other than that she needed a little cleaning from sitting in a garage for many years. Spider webs and dirt dobber nests were under the flywheel. I cleaned her up some and sanded the points lightly before putting the flywheel back on. Her spark plugs are mismatched but she still has a little fire left in her. Her cold compression is 59 and 60 so I imagine she is a little tired but still wants to run. I pulled the carb off and took it apart and cleaned before putting it back together with self made gaskets for the time being.
I wanted to see if she would fire up. I pulled and pulled and well…you get the point. As I was sitting there looking at her I wondered to myself if maybe…just maybe someone else may have the plug wires backwards. I switched the wires and pulled one more time…..she purred like a kitten. I know she still needs some work beginning with a carb kit.
So if someone can help point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
I would like some info on where to find a carb kit.
What should the compression be?
What spark plugs should be used and at what gapping?
I am sure I will have more questions later on but this will get me started.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.
