Hello Folks,
I found this older Evinrude for sale awhile back and decided to buy it. However I can use some help with it. I looked in the Sticky page to try and find the year and HP of this motor. If I looked it up right I believe it to be a 1953 7.5…please correct me if I am wrong.
The motor looks to be all original except for the paint on the gas tank. I am missing the cap for the gas tank and the recoil spring for the pull rope needs to be replaced. Other than that she needed a little cleaning from sitting in a garage for many years. Spider webs and dirt dobber nests were under the flywheel. I cleaned her up some and sanded the points lightly before putting the flywheel back on. Her spark plugs are mismatched but she still has a little fire left in her. Her cold compression is 59 and 60 so I imagine she is a little tired but still wants to run. I pulled the carb off and took it apart and cleaned before putting it back together with self made gaskets for the time being.
I wanted to see if she would fire up. I pulled and pulled and well…you get the point. As I was sitting there looking at her I wondered to myself if maybe…just maybe someone else may have the plug wires backwards. I switched the wires and pulled one more time…..she purred like a kitten. I know she still needs some work beginning with a carb kit.
So if someone can help point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.
I would like some info on where to find a carb kit.
What should the compression be?
What spark plugs should be used and at what gapping?
I am sure I will have more questions later on but this will get me started.
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Re: Help Identify Older Evinrude

You are correct, `1953 Fleetwin 7.5hp

Use Champion J6C plugs gapped to 030. Point gap is 020. Fuel oil ratio is 1/2 pint per gallon.

I have one back on a rack as well, but have never gotten to it. Actually I may have 2 of them, I forget now.

I cannot think off hand anywhere you can buy a carb kit for the pre '55 Fleetwins. Most of that will be individual sales or make your own.

Sorry.

I would change the impeller for sure. You will not get a ton of compression on that, it may increase the more you run it. Decarb with seafoam, directions in FAQS here on site.

might have to remove the powerhead on that one to get at the impeller in the lower unit (have a '57 that requires powerhead removal). I've been putting off doing it, but the last time I did it think the point was to disconnect the shift linkage under the powerhead. See if you can get a parts and/or service manual for that model (maybe check out Ken Cook).

No that model predates the need to remove the power head. The lower unit comes off. That's where the clutch spring is also.

Re: Help Identify Older Evinrude

Thanks for the info guys. I am working out of town right now so I do not have much time to work on it but I really would like to get this old girl running good once again. When I have a little more time I am sure I will be asking for more help.

For $40. bucks she has been a cheap date so far...but as usual...the more time I spend with her the more she will cost... :D
Thanks again
