If the key is partly sheared or completely sheared, with the flywheel shifted a small amount retarding the spark, it could make slow speed operation poor at best, and limit the high speed power. Why not look at it? Probably takes less time to check than waiting for all the speculative replies from everyone.

Byacey
All that is involved in checking that is removing the flywheel correct ?
Is the key visable from that point ?
Also should I mark where flywheel is sitting before removal ?
Thank You

Just pull the flywheel... theres a slot on the flywheel and the crank... the key fits inside the slot on the crank and the flywheel is lined up so the key will fit in it's slot. It's easy and if you have'nt done it do it... only costs the trouble of getting the flywheel off... might cost you a steering wheel puller, and a key if it's sheard. You'll know if it's sheard or not.

Re: Help is anyone local motor has pushed my buttons for the last time

Hey Guys

I did get the flywheel off today and they flywheel key looks fine and everything underneath the wheel checked out ok, so Im guessing that the problems are lying in the carbs
If the timeing is off would that also cause this problem ?
How can I check the timeing

Make sure you have the flywheel torqued to the proper spec or you'll risk having a sheared flywheel key, I think it's 105 foot pounds but you may want double check.

If you haven't made any adjustments to the timing its unlikely it would have changed on its own.

Have you checked your fuel pump yet, float is set right in the carbSort of sounds like your starving for fuel [running lean].If you take the pump apart shine a bright light underneath the diafram and see if there are any pin holes,if so replace it

My previous post of 10/07/05.... did you run the test mentioned? If so, what were the results? If you're not running Champion QL77JC4 plugs, do so and set the gap to .040 .

You mentioned that when it stalls you have to take the cover off. Run it without the cover and see how it does. You may have an exhaust leak. Can't run on it's own exhaust.

Dave, earlier you said you were going to go through the carbs again, have you done this?

As has been said before it sounds like its running lean. I think you've picked up some blockage.

Since you're getting fuel to the lower carb and it has to go through the upper carb to get there, the blockage would most likely be in the jets or passages of the top carb.

Of coarse Joe has much more experience with these motors than I do or ever will :D

Sounds like the carburetors are fouled. Even if you've already had them apart, I'd suggest double checking them.

Re: Help is anyone local motor has pushed my buttons for the last time

Have you done a search on here about carb cleaning? If you have you will already know that the carbs looking O.K, and actually being O.K are two different things!

It's the jets and passages that need to be spotless. Have you taken the little aluminium plugs out and cleaned the tiny passages under them, etc?
