if you have a tachometer disconnect it then try it....
If you dont.... leave everything on the + side of the coil and disconnect everything on the - (negative) side of the coil. rig up a test wire with aligator clips on both ends. Pull the high tension lead from the off of the cap and hold it 7/16ths of an inch from ground with some insulating pliers. Using your test lead you just made up, clamp 1 end to the coil's negative, then quickly tap the other end against ground (but do not hold it there, just tap it) and see if you get spark. (this has to be done with the key on) if you get spark the coil is good. and your problem is before it.
