Help with evenrude 140 prop size/throtle adjust MANUAL?

Well im new here, but I figured I'd try my luck as I am compleatly ignored on the Whaler forum.

So I got a 18.5' Boston Whaler with an Evinrude 140. Both are 83' I assume.
I beleive the Whaler is a GTX, but not sure as it is a bow rider not a center console.
So far with the engine to get it running nice I have chainged the wires & plugs and I replaced the rectifier. It runs nice now up at about 55-5600 at full throtle.

The issue is it is running a 14x13 prop. I want to replace it, but that prop is made for a house boat or pontune boat for a moter and boat this size. So why is my engine only up at 5500rpm? Shouldnt my engine run to high with this prop and the fact that it doesnt tells me I have something wrong? It sounds strong now, but should I do a compression test? I have not checked the setting on the back of the RPM gauge, but I think it is suposed to be 6? I would assume it is not the problem. There is a triangle arrow on the guage at 5500 and I assume that is the max RPM as that is what my boat runs at. I guess the boat should be running a 19 or 21 pitch but Im sure that would not work so I was going to try a 13.25x17. If that slows it down too much is there a way to adjust WOT RPM or is it just done off of idle RMP. Couldnt the throttle cable of streched? There are two adjuster wheels around the cables that come into the engine and I assume these are what I could use, but I also read about a stop screw. Basically I need to get the manual for this engine but am not sure where to get it.

I will keep posting here as I work to figure this out, but being a newb to this any help would be appreciated. I am good with a wrench but im just not farmiliar with outboards.

TIA

If the motor is a 1983 model, it is a crossflow, and at WOT should not exceed say 5800 RPM. The full throttle operating range in the service manual is 4,500 to 5,500.

For the size of the boat, I think you may be set up correctly, though you might find another propeller in that pitch range would perform better.

Yea I really need to get a speed reading before I swap it, even tough the 14x13 on there is a little messed up from running a ground.
So you think stick with the 14x13 or try a 13 1/4 x 17.
Really dont way to try too many as im poor. But the guy from turning point props and other places (below) I have seen online do say the 14x13 is for a houseboat/pontoon boat for a motor this size. I just done know what come with the boat stock, or it this prop was used because it was better for skiing (there is a ski pylon).
What is crossflow. I know I read something about this and later years the RPM when up

Do you know how much your boat weighs? If the foam is satuarted with water then you will need to deal with that before worring about the prop. If there is no water in it then you are probably proped right. The shape of the hull has a lot to do with what prop you need as well as the weight. As far as giving it extra fuel, when the butterflys are wide open then you are getting all the gas that you are supposed do. You really need a manual, you will refer to it all the time once you hav eone.

If the boat is a 1983 18 GTX, it is a relatively heavy boat compared to the center console whalers.

You should check the actual gear ratio of your lower unit, too. It is entirely possible that the unit has V6 or V8 gears.

I have no recommendation for Turning Point propellers, but I did use one for a day. I have had good service and performance from OEM propellers and from Michigan Wheel propellers.

There is a good propeller forum here at iboats, but you need to get all of the information together for them to help much.

I would think the 13 would make a good ski prop but I'm a bit surprised you can't turn more rpm. I'd start with the basics - compression, spark test. make sure the carbs are clean and a decarb job. Check the sync-n-link, make sure the carbs are opening fully. Check wot timing. Should be at no more than 28*.

Re: Help with evenrude 140 prop size/throtle adjust MANUAL?

Well I dont ski now so Im getting a 13.25x17 for $140
I need a manual, I dont know how to do all that other stuff. Im sure I can do a compression test if I buy one at a auto parts store, and I have replaced all the plugs wires and the rectifyer which was needed, but besides that i don't know what im doing as Im new to outbards and have no manual. I can see some fuel spirting out of the black pump at the front of the engine. Its got what looks like a tire valve cover on the top of it and it seems to squirt out of that on startup and there seem to be some other leaks, but im not sure where the carbs and stuff are.

Well I guess I need to go get it wighed? is that how I would determine if the foam is saturated? Sorry for being so ignorant.

And it cant be a GTX because it has a max HP of 150. The reg says 9TX and I assumed it was just a mistake as I can't find any info. Its basic empty wieght on the placard is like 1450.

I went thru all the 83 whalers on here and none of them fit the discription of my boat. 18.5' bowrider. I could not click on one that was second from the bottom above tender...

The part thats leaking is the primer solenoid. Probaly has a cracked cap. Easy to fix. When you pull it off be very careful of the two small hoses. The nipples break pretty easy. But if the cap is cracked you don't need to worry about breaking the nipples since the cap will be replaced anyway.

Re: Help with evenrude 140 prop size/throtle adjust MANUAL?

Thanks, new here and didnt see the prop forum.
I got a 13.25x17. I had to take he trim/tilt unit off to run the boat, more on that below. So I ran it and without being able to trim it I cant really tell. But it did seem to cavitate out of the hole so that is an issue. I will next check compression.

The trim was getting stuck up. I topped it off and still no luck. Pump is running si seems like a solinoid valve is stuck. It has some leaks so I figure I should rebuild it. Once I got all the bolts and pin out It did go down. Not sure what I need besides the O'ring kit. Bought the CLYMER EVINRUDE/JOHNSON OUTBOARD SHOP MANUAL 1973-1990 so I guess that will help. I will start a new topic on that and basically my whole overhall of the engine and boat.

Re: Help with evenrude 140 prop size/throtle adjust MANUAL?

Well I changed the lower unit to the larger 15 spline from an 84 V4 looper so now it needs a new prop again. I am selling the boat, but did want to throw a prop on it so the person buying it can use it right away. Thinking I might be able to have a new hub put into the 13.25x17 prop, but not sure it is worth it cost wise.
Boat weight is 1350 lbs.
engine is 1983 140 evinrude crossflow 25" shaft with 1984 V4 lower unit: ~350lbs
fuel capacity is 63 gal: 447.3 so half~200lbs
occupants:3-4~500lbs
and beer: 25lbs
battery and misc:150
1350+350+200+500+25+150=2575
hull is the same as outrage.
max RPM is 5600 from what I recal.

I bought a 14.75x17 SST which hopefully will work.
