Well, Ive made the deal to get a 64 Johnson thats dead ... but ... he said it ran great, smooth and strong, but crapped out the other week ...

its a forty horse, electric start (woo hoo! BIG BOAT stuff ... yeah yeah, the SeaCraft and the 125 Johnson are too far from running to count!!!)(even a new starter in that dammned SeaCraft, grumble)

But here is the question, I think its something simple, fuel pump died, carb sucked up some gunk, so I want to do a carb rebuild, fuel pump rebuild and get a complete tune kit from that eBay guy that sells the coils and points for fifty bucks ...

IN CASE ITS NOT SOMETHING SIMPLE ....

would the 35 powerhead bolt on to the 40? the 35 is a 1959, and the 40 is a 1964 ... they look like twins, prolly run like kissin cousins, lol, well, once they are RUNNING again ...

Get ready gang ... Ive installed the Garbage disposal, re did the plumbing my kid brother screwed up at the old mans house, car is running ok, hung the shelves, painted the rads and got that old piece of ship air conditioner stack at moms bar squared away (WHEW!, no wonder Im worn out!) basically shotgunned the Honey Do list ... time to turn some wrenches, lol, and Ill be throwing out lifelines like some guy on who wants to be a millionare being asked "whats the longest coastline in the world"?
(answer: Heeeeeeeeeeeeereeeee Johnny!! Ed McMahon coasted on that line for THIRTY YEARS!)

Hey, Ray.

Troubleshoot it to find out what's wrong before you start replacing or rebuilding stuff.

You can really complicate a problem, or even mask it, with the "replace or rebuild until it works or I am broke" approach.

Good luck. :)

isnt it best to redo those specific areas tho?its old, lol, Ill diagnose the problem but shouldnt the pump, carb, and coils be done up before they fail?
I appreciate yer looking out for me JB, I really do, just seems like cheap insurance against a long row back in

well

til I get that ten horse kicker going

I agree that most of that stuff would be a good idea, Ray.

My point is that they should be done to solve a known problem or to improve a running engine. That means troubleshoot first.

Good luck. :)

Yep, check the basics first. Does it have spark? Compression? Don't buy any parts until you find out if it's worth it or not. I'm afraid I can't answer your powerhead compatibility question. Good luck!

thanks for the input guys, I cant tell you how empowering it is to have such a collective knowledge base to work with ... 15 years ago I was crushed in a trucking accident, and well, long story short, against all odds and predictions, the Big Guy walks and talks and is ready (albeit with certain restrictions and limitations) to rock and roll, and I truly LOVE to be surrounded by water, I cannot tell you the peace that it gives me ...

and with my strength and confidence roaring back, I want to take on the boats, I think ill use Chugboat Annie ... which may need to be renamed if I can get this dual motor thing figured out, but even a 40 should rock right along ...

and save the restoration of Hydrophobia for the fall and winter

I used to do auto repair and towing for a living, so I do have some skills ... long dormant, but theyll return, I have faith

and with the grace of God, this forum and my trusty Mac box, Ill have a RUNNING boat!

Gotta love it!
