Re: Holy crap I just bought a boat!

sounds like yo have the title issue covered. I have done a storage lien sale for a marina and as was said above, there are a lot of hoops to jump through. But as long as you and the marina owner work together on it (AND if he does it right) then it can end up OK. It may take time, but if you both are willing, you can start on it while going through the process (for example, if he has to give 30 days notice of sale). You don't have much at risk--yet--if the title issue goes sideways.

Every state's procedure is different so don't rely on ANY internet info on the specifics.

It would probably be worth another couple hundred dollars to see an attorney to make sure that the title is on the up-and-up. Nothing worse then if you put in tons of time and money to have someone walk up and take the boat away from you. It surely doesn't sound right that the Marina had the title. Usually the Marina has to have a real sale that sells the boat at its true value and you will be issued a Sheriff's title. But like I said, each state laws are different, and its a good idea to see an attorney.

Re: Holy crap I just bought a boat!

well I think I got a pretty good grasp on the situation with the marina and Texas laws, and here is basically what happened:

1. original owner signs lease, and stops paying.
2. lease expires, original owner is no where to be found
3. multiple letters and mailed, many calls made, all documented
4. years pass with at least one attempt to contact every 6 months
5. owner notifies TPW that the boat will be auctioned, presents documents.
6. title search, no other liens
7. Auction, Marina must relinquish any and all liens
8. TPW issues a NEW title to me on the boat.

that last point might be the most important, if Texas Parks and Wildlife issues a new title, how would any previous owner have claim to it? Keep in mind, this thing has been abandoned for years.

It is a Bayliner and has an OMC Cobra so keep both of those in mind before spending too much money on it.

its got a 5.7 mercruiser carb, should have taken off the filter to see if it is a 2 or 4 barrel

Isn't that one of the most common engines in the marine world?

It has a 5.7L Chevrolet engine but the drive is an OMC Cobra.

There is no such thing as a Mercruiser 5.7L carb. More than likely it has a quadrajet carb.

Don't even think about starting it before you go through prep work of starting an engine that has sat a long time. First thing I would do is pull it out of the water so you can work on it on dry land.

I'm not 100% but I'm pretty sure it had 5.7 stamped in it and I know its carbureted ... as far as the initial start up, etc. I am leaving that to a trained professional, I can handle a lot of misc mechanical problems, but this is over my head.

Good luck. Don't sink much money into this thing until you know the integrity of the transom and drive.

Come with a trailer?

no trailer, but I do have limited access to one if needed. Believe me, no more money than absolutely nessasary to get a good evaluation will be spent.

New boat owner.... get out your wallet. A boat is a hole in the water in which you pour money (I think I read that from a Joe Reeves post a few years ago).

its incredibly easy to break the bank on a boat. i have a 14' lund i bought for 2100$ 2 years ago. p.o. put the water pump wrong in the 25hp johnson somehow no idea how and it overheated. 1200$ for a 1999 30hp outboard (deal) and spent 750$ on a new floor foam SS hardware etc. for a 14' boat I'm in for practically 4,000

parts I'm not too worried about, like I mentioned earlier I can get damn near anything thing I need at distributor cost, what worries me is catastrophic failure and labor (blown motor, etc)

yeaaaaa im with bubba, thats a 200 dollar 24 foot boat, if you can get it running decent, and clean it, its a 4-5k boat. so dont pay no mind to all the omc haters and bayliner haters, when talking about boats of this vintage, condition and does it run means a hell of a lot more then, its a bayliner, it has an OMC.....i get so sick of hearing it...... goodluck with it man, thats a sweet deal. regardless of ANYTHING

Re: Holy crap I just bought a boat!

Great news on the title! Texas parks and wildlife approved the transaction, my marina guy was squared away on all of the paperwork including, but not limited to, sealed letters and POD (6) to the previous owner, past due bills, auction listings in the paper, and so on. Process took about 45 minutes, all I was responsible for was one signiture transferring the title from the marina to me and $50.50. The marina owner is a great guy and he's even allowing me to keep the boat out there for a couple of months rent free so I can figure out what to do with it. Now I got to start praying that the engine block and lower unit are good!
