you bastard. you lucky bastard. only if i had your luck. that boat is an easy 10k boat from the pics.
He got a great deal, but not that great. Probably a $5k boat when cleaned up and in good running order.

But I'd love to find such a deal!

Re: Holy crap I just bought a boat!

Update:

Things are just plugging along at this point. So far there has been no major repairs/failures, just an ungodly amount of ticky tack crap that takes an insane amount of time to address, but I guess I should have figured considering I spent 200 dollars on the damn thing. Its cleaning up pretty well and I think I have done a pretty good job of managing my expectations, and by that I mean I know it will never look great, but I sure as hell can make it look good. As far as short term/long term things to work on, well, eehhh, everything. The gelcoat still needs 3 or 4 more coats of polish followed with vigorous amounts penetrol and wax. The interior is just, well, dingy. It needs to be upholstered, soon, you just can drag quality tang down there with it looking the way it does, well I can, but it takes way too much effort.

I just realized that this thread could make a dissertation look like a picture book if I spelled it all out. Anyway, just wanted to check in, I will get some more pics up soon.

Ya know, I've read where people have said they spit coffee all over their monitor, choked on their sandwich, etc but this actually made hot coffee come out of my nose, shoot all over my shirt and keyboard and ruined my keyboard in the process!!!!

Haha, sorry about that moa...

Apologies for the lack of pics, I'll get some more as soon as I can. I spent all last week and this weekend reupholstering the interior with some navy blue fabric (looks good by my standards). I also wetsanded the entire top half of the hull and compounded, compounded, polished, polished, and waxed and waxed again, and got it looking good, not great, but good. After all of that I ran out of elbow grease and just fished for most of the day yesterday.

Looking good so far-sounds like you are getting plenty of practice sanding and polishing! Hope your buffer machine is up to the challenge!

Re: Holy crap I just bought a boat!

Quick question/thoughts:

Well the lake level has finally come up enough to get the boat safely on a trailer so I can finally do some basic maintenance to the old girl to get her running right, the big question is, what should I replace to get ahead of some potential problems.

Current situation: 88 bayliner 2455 w/ 5.7 OMC. Running, idles great, only been out once on the 3-4 mile trek across the lake (didnt push it, just kinda idled over), been sitting for 4,5,6, years dont really know. Lots of growth on the hull, it is painted, all the electrical components work, no major issues to this point.

List of what I will to do:
Change all fluids, filters, and pump impeller

Things I'm considering but am not sure if are totally necessary:
Thermostat, spark plugs & wires, distributor cap, and belt.

anything I should add to that wish list?

Rotor but I'm sure you meant to list it, I would replace the hoses too, take the outdrive off and replace the bellows and completely lube everything, I mean completely displace the old grease and replace it with good stuff, replace or completely lube the steering and throttle cables.

I'm sure I am missing a few things but good luck Sir!

I like to start at one end and just go through things. If it looks like it needs regular maintenance then put it on your list. Pretty much anything that should have been maintained should at least be checked. No need to go crazy, replacing things that just need a little sprucing up that won't do anything but drain your wallet. Just be sensible. If it's safety related take care of it first then gradually work your way through your list until you feel the boat is both safe and dependable.

I have to say, when I started reading this thread, I thought you go screwed. However, I think you may have got a decent deal. Did you ever get the title? I have never been able to get a title without having the old one.

Yup, title in hand. TPW issued me a new title in my name. As far as a good deal is concerned, I damn near got it for free, I may have 1,200 dollars invested in it so far minus slip fees and I have already got a ton of enjoyment out of it just spending the night out there, fishing and enjoying the boating community. Bottom line is that if I'm not spending money on that boat I'd probably be spending it on something else.

When you pull the drive, check your alignment too. if you have water in the bellows, very likely that you will need to change the gimbal bearing and u-joints.

Well I took ol' whiskey dent out for her first major test after getting all of her fluids and filters changed (damn drought). And... guess what... blew the lower unit. She ran like a champ for about 10 minutes with a top speed around 35 (outstanding) but it failed and failed hard. Now I'm toying with either changing the upper/lower unit or just scrapping the damn thing. Not looking for advice, but just thought I would give my fellow iboaters an update.

I'm no expert but it seems to me for all the work you put in it already you might as well go ahead and replace it. You still got it cheap and it will give you tons of enjoyment once it's all fixed up.
