Re: Honeycomb tansom core.

I envision it as more of a "Trampoline" type deck, I doubt anyone will step through it with the glass cloth holding it together... but I don't think it will wear well or be long lasting.

The bad thing about it is that after the deck is installed there won't be any turning back later if it proves unsatisfactory without tearing up all the work that has been done now.

Yeah understandable and your right, better to do it now and not need it then find out later he made a mistake in his math and go oh $--t. I would rather have the reinforcement myself and not worry about it..

So after much thought and deliberation. I glued the floor tonight. Just could not justify the extra bulkheads.
I put a top skin on the floor on the glassing bench. Then tested in the boat with two skins on the floor sheet and I could not get any flex.

So glue drying tonight. Ready for 4" tabbing and an overlap layer

5 days until I leave for family Xmas. And boat must be in tow.

Am glad you got it worked out, I wish you good luck on a job well done to bad you couldn't get a video of your boat in action on the water for us to see when you get back..

Be careful out there

I'm really enjoying your project. Are you using polyester resin or epoxy? Also what is the glue you are using to "glue down" the deck? I used west systems 6-ten to glue my wood deck in place. Its a gel epoxy, is it something like that?

I see what looks like a Gas Gas swingarm in a pic...

Is this Micah?

Re: Honeycomb tansom core.

My "glue" is simply west system microfiber blend with 20% qcells.

I am using FGI(nuplex composites) r180 epoxy resin.

No quite a gas gas swingarm. But a crf 250r Honda. Good pick up though.

Big progress day today.

Floor perimeter coved and taped.
Rear floors finished
Cap reinstalled. Used sikaflex 292. And 3/16" SS pop rivets. Every 3". Same arrangement as factory. So all alignments went together perfectly. Gunwale rubber installed onto the squeezed out 292.

Rear motorwell coved and taped to transom.

Removable bait board sleeves installed. These are solid glass tube molded off a piece of 2" PVC pipe. 1000gsm Uni. Three layers. Then cut into 6" sleeves. One went on the floor. The second was scalloped into the foreward face of the motorwell. Pvc Pipe was centered with the sleeves. Then 200kg foam was used to fill the voids on the loaded points. Cove and taped with a layer of Uni and biax.
This will hopefully be the removable skipole sleeves also. Hence the structural aspect needed.

Seatboxes internally glassed ready for install.
Enough text here is the pics.

Just a quick update. 15hrs of use on the new transom. No cracks. No noises. No flex.
Has been used in all sea states and wind strengths. Might be time to paint it.

No issues with the deck at all. I really can't make the deck flex. I think with a month of curing it is a lot stiffer now.

Re: Honeycomb tansom core.

So how did you do your motor bolts when you mounted the motor?

I wonder if this product is available in the US without having to pay shipping from down-under? Wonder if they could foam fill the cores before putting the last layer on?

Correct doing exactly that. Last weekend got 14 crabs. Biggest went 2.2kg on the scales. Boating in a pleasant 30 degrees Celsius. Board shorts and singlet weather. Very nice. Tropical Queensland. Where else would you rather be!

Re: Honeycomb tansom core.

My motor bolts where de-cored early on with a 2" hole saw. Then filled with an epoxy Cabasil mix in stages.

So the final bolt hole layup ended up like this. From outside in.

Original solid glass transom. 4mm thick polyester choppy.
2x 450 double bias glass and epoxy.
15mm solid Cabasil.
1x double bias.
15mm solid Cabasil.
4x double bias on inside.

The bolts then had 2" diameter thick stainless panel washers to disperse the load over the whole solid core.

Strong enough you think?

I've looked and haven't been able to find a North American distributor, if you should find one let us know.

Dammit man! That's a 5 lb. crab!

Are you eating them or selling them?

Crabs are for eating mate. Not a professional just a recreational crabber.

Do you have Nuplex composites or Fibreglass international over there? They are my distributors.

Nah, I looked them up and they're just around Oz, Kiwiville, Thailand, Vietnam and such.

Re: Honeycomb tansom core.

It wouldn't be the weight that would cost......just the size of the material that would rack the cost to ship it from there. Then there's no guarantee that it wouldn't get damaged in shipping too.
