How do I change an impeller on a 4hp Chrysler Sea King?

I have a 4hp Chrysler Sea King and need to replace the impeller on it but find myself clueless as how to get the lower unit detached in order to get to the impeller. I have removed the nut from the bolt on the back side of the lower unit that faces upward towards the motor head, removed the nut from the underside of the lower unit by the output shaft, removed the flathead screw from the side of the lower unit, and have even even loosened the shift linkage screw from the window port situated halfway down the shaft.

After doing the above, I am still unable to get the lower unit to drop. I even went as far as removing the four allen head bolts that secure the propeller to the lower unit, but think that I would need a puller tool to remove the propeller housing from the lower unit.

My question to you is this: Do I need to remove/extract the propeller mechanism (held on by 4 allen bolts) from the lower unit utilizing a puller of some sort or do I have to figure out what else needs to be disconnected along the upper or lower shaft housing in order for the lower unit to be removed.

Your knowledge on the matter is greatly appreciated.

The diagrams do not show it but there should be a cover plate on the front of the leg and a nut behind it. This is the front stud that secures the gearcase to the motor leg. If you have already removed it, it is possible that the stud has corroded tight and will need to be persuaded.

The four allen head bolts do not need to be removed.

It is possible that after removing both bolts or studs that secure the gearcase to the leg, it still will not drop. Sometimes, the driveshaft gets corroded into the crankshaft. If you force it, the impeller drive pin will either break, bend, or ruin the upper pump seal. However, there are no positive bolts or anything else holding the drive shaft into the gearcase so it will come up out of the pump. Then, you can worry it out of the crankshaft, buy a new seal, and reassemble everything.

Frank,

Thank you very much for the informative reply. I will do as suggested and may employ some Marvel Mystery Oil or PB Blaster to assist in the effort. I will be sure to follow up on the thread and let you all know how it went.

Cheers
