Re: How long is a boat good for
In 1971 I bought a brand new Silverline Comoro package for $2850 - boat show special. I kept her garaged and covered for 13 years, then sold her for $2600. She looked brand new at the time and I'm confident I would still have her and she would still be pristine if we hadn't outgrown the size.
In 2008 by accident I saw her again with a for sale sign on somebody's front lawn. This is a 37 year old boat now. It was still the second owner and he had continued with the maintenance and indoor storage. I was amazed - she still looked like new. Selling price was $1900. Not bad depreciation, huh?
In 2009 I saw her again on a lawn. Ohhhh, outside storage now. No cover. Looked a little shabby. Deck (floor) faded, gelcoat a little chalky, trailer some rust. The guy was a first time boater and he decided he didnt want one after all. He was asking $1500 - don't know what he got.
Now, 2011. Once again - on the lawn. 3 years uncovered now. The owner says $1000. The seats are ruined. 3 years ago the vinyl was supple and glossy. Now its all faded and cracking. The floor is rotten. Maple seeeds on the floor and sprouting. The trailer is solid rust.
Soooo, to answer the original question, I would guess the "potential" life would be 5 years to infinity. The "average" life span (considering all the abuse the "typical" owner shells out) is about 10-20 years, based on the junked boats I see at the marina near my house.
