2002 Mercury 90ELPTO Saltwater series. <br />Runs great. Most will if you sneek out at night when the wife isn't looking and talk sweet to them! ;) ;)

Re: How old is your engine?

I have a 1972 johnson 100HP, used in salt its whole life, apart from stuff like the powerpack its been mechanically sound its whole life. (the guy that had it before me loved it also.)<br /><br />I also have a 1962 Evinrude 40HP that apart from some electrical probs, (doesn't change the battery anymore) but otherwise works fine.<br /><br />Lastly I have a 1976 6hp chrysler kicker, I broke the pullstarter recently, but other then that, I love this motor its a fuel miser, its quiet, and very reliable.. (not big enough as a kicker for my boat though :-(<br /><br />I think older motors when looked after are a brilliant way to save money..<br /><br />after all, when you buy new, you are paying just because its a "marine" device..<br /><br />after all, most of the bigger outboards new cost more then an entire new car...<br />I don't think anyone actually thinks they contain more $$$ of materials then a complete car, and they cant' require more effort to construct, so why are we paying so much for what is essentially a strap on motor and gearbox?<br /><br />rgds<br /><br />Franki

One word - Mercury. You're right - it cost a good deal less to build an outboard than an entire car with the same HP, even though the outboard cost more. Take Mercruiser inboards for example - it cost what, $6000+ for a 350? I can get a brand new street long block for $1200, and a really nice high performance crate motor for under $4k. It doesn't cost them anymore to build that engine, they just use different things, and almost have a monopoly on the market....

Re: How old is your engine?

My current oldest is a 72 Johnson 25 horse. 2 years ago it developed that nasty slam-bang, scare-the-crap-out-of-you problem with the clutch-dog and/or forward gear. I got irritated with it and stuck it in the shed on it's back where it's been for 2 years. The other day I decided I'd better fix the lower unit and do something with it so I stood it up, hooked it up, yanked the cord 3 times choked and then 4 more times and away it went. Humming along as if I'd just been running it an hour ago. I always have and always will really like these older die hard OMC's. The rest of my line up is a 75 Evinrude 15, a 79 Evinrude 6 and a 2002 40 horse Nissan. For a new motor I couldn't beat the price on that Nissan. I'll decide if I really like it in 10 years or so.

1963 Merc 1000. Runs good, but cranky to start. I will be rebuilding the carbs and fuel pumps, along with new seals in the L/U.

Re: How old is your engine?

The three '47's I got are cherry....never been in the water. I still got the box for the 3.3hp. They even still got the inspection tags on them. So, after checking them out for spark and general lubing, I decided not to run them. There just fer lookin' at.<br /><br />The Johnny 2.2 will run. Had it going after refurbishing it. Nice. <br /><br />The 38' 9.3 runs but needs a good cleaning and new gaskets here and there.<br /><br />The 36' 31.2hp is a real beast. Gotta weigh in at nearly 150lbs. Needs a bunch of work. Darn thing even got electric start. Got one battery cable left on it the size of your arm! Gotta get to Ken Cook for manuals.<br /><br />I forgot to mention I got hold of a British SeaGull. One cylinder. The prop blades are square. Strange looking critter.

Hey my driver is a 1988! (based on a 1947-57 design though).<br /><br />I can't see myself ever running anything but the Tower of Power. Those motors and I have a strange bond.<br /><br />-W

1970 Merc 500. I'm not sure what you'd have to do to it to keep it from running. It's a little underpowered on my trihull but I would and have trusted it with my life. Regular maintenance and taking it easy with it are all I've ever done.

Re: How old is your engine?

Last motor 1970 85 hp johnson, ran like a beast, current motor 1973 85 hp johnson, sat for 17 years, brought it home, squirt oil in cylinders, engine spun 6 times, fired up, runs also like a beast. Dad has 1973 65hp johnson, owned it for over twenty years, has only had to replace powerpack 1 time. All of these motors our easy to work on, although they may not be environmentaly friendly (the day they make the space shuttle go through emissions is the day I give a f#$%). I suspect this 1973 motor I have now might out live me, if taken care of, and as long as I own it, it will be

Never wore an outboard out, never terminated one.<br /><br />I have resurrected several that had been declared dead, including a 1936 Water Witch.<br /><br />Only one I still have is a 1947 Sea King 1.5. "Put,put, put, put, put." :D

Re: How old is your engine?

I have a 1977 Merc 1500. Had a zillion hard hours on it. Wife blew it up some years ago (waterpump) hasn't been quite the same. Also, it sunk twice in salt water (non-running). That also didn't help much!<br /><br />I had a '58 50HP Johnson. I dropped that one into the salt water while running at planing speed. It swam for 60 hours, until I could retrieve it. Hosed it off, cleaned the grit out of the cylinders. It started right up. It proved that 60 hours of salt water could never defeat 35 years of grease and oil.<br /><br />I finally gave the Johnson (and the attached boat) away since I had three boats and only dockage for two.
