Re: How to get your dog back into boat!! (emergency)

Hire one of those Swamp People guys. If they can get a 1,000 pound gator in their boat, they can handle a dog.

My dog is half lab and half newfoundland. Web feet and a rudder for a tail. When he was 3 months old, I took him swiming with me. I really wanted a dog that would love the water. That is why I chose this dog. After that day, he didn't like the idea of getting wet. He would walk around a wet spot on the ground.

sounds good, but i like my dog and dont want to tie rope around her neck and drag her in almost dead.
Now he is over 150 pounds and I know there would be no way of getting him lifted into my boat being soaking wet. I looked for life vests for the just in case, but there isn't any for an extremely heavy dog.

All in all, it turned out great as I know now he doen't every want to go overboard with his fear of the water. The real odd thing is, he is great taking a bath.

sounds good, but i like my dog and dont want to bring her in with a rope arund the neck almost dead.

Re: How to get your dog back into boat!! (emergency)

My first question is, if your boat has no swim platform, no ladder, and "lots of freeboard", how would you get back into the boat if for some reason you ended up in the water?

Ive lifted a full grown lab over into a 14ft flat bottom fishing boat before, talk about a chore! all our weight on one side, we both almost went swimming.

As far as the comment about lifting the dog from the water, that is almost impossible. Ive tried that before, and it wasnt even a large dog. you try to lift the dog, you just go under. We finally got him back on the boat, but i had to use the kneeboard for extra float, and someone up on the boat pulling.

The dog life vest is the best bet. It has a handle on the back just for this, and if you cant get the dog in the boat, they wont drown while you figure something else out.

no problem for me,i can make it,but to pull up the dog my back isnt worthy.

You simply have to jump in after your dog. My dog weighs 100#, and he is easy to get in from the water.

ok,so i jump in and lift her up right!! oops! theres no bottom to push against, ill just activate my hydrolic arms instead..read the post more.

dogs are surprisingly good at climbing ladders...the pool kind, not the roof kind lol. i think if you put a hook ladder on the gunnel and led your pup to the steps she would have no problems. when their paws find a rung, it's totally natural for them to start using their legs. you'd be in the boat guiding her to you...no problem. something like these: http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Hook-Ladders/dm/*******.579145878--**********.259023671--view_id.236407

a swim platform is the best way to go. it doesn't have to be huge. just a simple landing. you don't need to be on the platform with the dog. they do most of the work pulling themselves up. the only thing they need is a hand behind their head to give them leverage. this is our regular swim platform workout:

easy for you to say as your platform sits 2inches from water.

We use a hunting vest on Bailey. Not only is she the envy of all other dogs sporting her advantage camo - but it gives me something to grab hold of if I need to. She's pushing 90 lbs, and I can still lift her in if I need to. Most of the time, she can get in by the ladder, but if she gets too tired, she needs a little help (12 years old will do that to a Lab).

In an emergency, you could haul a whale in if he was part of the family.

I have the big dog version of the PetsMart harness on my 100lb Akita and I can lift her out of the water with it. I will say that there was someone on the ladder giving a little assistance on the lift. I also understand bad back, had some of that, back could very well prevent the heavy lift by yourself.

We have one of those doggy preservers for our 60lb chow after having the same concern. He has been well behaved while under way and have only taken him in/out while anchored in shallow water. That handle does help allot, but we also have small swim platforms. In an emergency, I think you could lift the dog high enough to get his front paws over the transom. Dog would then be assisting on the lift.

As others have stated, you probably want a boarding ladder and maybe small swim platform for yourself, that would also help with the dog.

Our dog is only about 30lbs so lifting her into boat isn't bad. Daughter's dog is 65+ lbs. Before vacation I made a device similar to the Load A Pup from PVC and plywood. It worked well but was a pain to put on/off swim ladder. I hope to eventually put a second swim platform on other side of OB and somehow permanently mount something like the Load A Pup.

I also like looks of the Beavertail ladder from Cabela's. Might check into that one more also.

I also suggest proper size life vest for dog. Most have handle sewn in but I don't trust them to lift dog. If you do go into water with the dog, the first time he/she will most likely do all it can to swim to you and climb onto your head, scratching you all the while :)

Me read more?????? You never said you couldn't touch bottom. Leave your dog home if you can't properly train your dog or aren't strong enough to lift.

Best of luck to you.

That's a fishing boat it doesn't have that much free board. But the doggy ladder accessories are cool. You could probably make one for $25.

The life jacket for dogs can be bought at Petsmart, Cabelas, or Bass Pro to name 3. They have a handle sewn on them for lifting.

We have one that will fit a full grown Collie, (88#'s), a Bassett Hound, (75#'s), a mini-Schnauzer, and one for a toy poodle.

The Collie weighs more than normal when wet, due to all the hair !!!! ;)

We put a leash on them while they are in the water, as I am paranoid about something happening to them. Besides the Bassett tires out QUICK !!!

Re: How to get your dog back into boat!! (emergency)

Dog life vest helps greatly as it is a sort of harness and has a handle, our dog is 35-40lbs and lifting him with the handle is the only way!

On the climbing ladders note, when in the water last year I boosted him up the swim ladder and he did the rest (put his paws to use climbing), I was impressed!

I see lots of dogs climbing up themselves on those floating ladders made just for dogs, they are sort of under water ramps.

Get your puppy a vest none the less, I was surprised how many dogs drown annually:(

I'm going to get a ladder for my Shepherd next season. For now, he has a vest with a handle. These handles do wear out over time. Probably needs replaced every year or two if you use it alot. Atleast this one doesn't try to jump out of the boat while underway, like my previous lab did all the time.;)
