Hello,
I have a 1975 Johnson 85 hp Outboard Model: 85ESL75. I removed the lower unit to replace seals and impeller and found that the copper water lines have been damaged.

How to remove a midsection

Hello,

I have a 1975 Johnson 85 hp V4 Outboard Model: 85ESL75. I removed the lower unit to replace seals and impeller and found that the copper water lines have been damaged and need to be replaced. Any help on removing the midsection and water lines would be great.

Thanks HockeyNut.

What you need to do is remove the powerhead and adaptor plate. That'll pull the exhaust tube and water tube out. Probably ought to get a shop manual before attempting that though.

How do you know it is damaged?
Did it work before you took the lower off?
Just trying to keep you from fixxing something that may not be broke.

Is there a bolt under the powerhead that I'm missing? I've looked over the manual and can't seem to find much info on this.

Thanks

There's a plate under the exhaust adapter that compresses the two flared ends of the water tube against the adapter. You need to remove the adapter to get to them.

1) Pull powerhead.

2) Pull adapter plate.

3) Pull water tube bracket.

Part #33 is what keeps the water tubes in.

When I pulled the lower unit off and looked inside the midsection I could see that someone else had done this before and damaged the lines on the ends and tried to striaghtin them out with what looks like a pliers.

Take a picture of the water tubes. My guess is that they're just fine as is.

Thanks iwombat,
Would you know if this could be a costly repair, and what if any seal and gasket kit I might need.

With the lower unit still removed, remove the powerhead.

You can now remove the adapter plate which has the water tubes attached to the underside of it.

There is no need to remove the entire center exhaust housing (midsection)

My manual is not to discriptive on to remove the powerhead, does that invole new gaskets and seals? Just so I can be prepared. I do have small engine exp. and mechanical back ground if that helps.
Thanks

Drawing on memory only.... You'll need the gasket that the powerhead sits upon, and the gasket that is under the adapter plate. You won't be distrubing any seals.

If it were mine, i'd just trim off the last 1/2" or so and be done with it. It's really not all that bad. You've got plenty of extra inside the water pump housing to play with.

If you decide to go the powerhead route, you'll need two gaskets. You will also need some kind of engine hoist or rafter mounted come-along to get the powerhead off. Be prepared to replace a few broken fasteners along the way as well as swear a lot. Pulling a 30+ year-old powerhead can be a challenge at times.

You should be able true those up, copper is really soft.

I would try anyhting and everything before puling the power head.

Maybe try a wood dowel the same size as the tube and taper the end so you can work it up in to the tube and true it.

As long as the tubes aren't bent, that is pushed upwards..... and the only problem is that they're out of round, they can be trued up easily with long nose pliers.

The state of those tubes would worry me.

Don't they have to make a watertight joint with the exit tubes on the water pump cover assembly, or am I missing something.

Re: How to remove a midsection

Vic..... The water tube makes a very good seal within the grommets of the water pump BUT only if the tube is round.

Wombat.... Not a good idea to cut the tube. There's not that much there to play with. Wish there was as that would have certainly made my day a few times.
