Re: how to remove starter?

If its a delco starter(later models)there will be 2 bolts horizontally thru to back of bell housing.
You will need a wrench on head at back of bell housing and a socket/extension on front side nut. One of the nuts is sort of hidden by solenoid.I think you can get at it without removing solenoid but its a bit awkward. I customized the nut on mine by welding a handle on it makes job a breeze.Earlier model had I think prestolite starters as far as I know they removed same but Ive no direct experience.

Not clear what you mean. You removed them but you can still see them? The bolts you are looking for are I think about 4 inches long, take either a 9/16 or a 5/8 wrench, head of bolt is aft,nut forward, once nut is off bolt will be loose in hole. Check for a starter support bracket near front of starter(mine didnt have one). If thats off or not there, starter should come out forward. It might be stuck. Rap it with a dead blow hammer or a 2x4,side to side, up down etc till it comes free. Shouldnt take much.

BT, A 488 is a 470 engine, not a chevy.

Re: how to remove starter?

If it's the same as the 470 and is the prestolite starter, all you need to do is remove the two bolts on the rear of the starter, and remove the nut or the whole bracket on the bottom of the starter (if it has the bracket) and the thing will slide forward out of the housing. I've read that those things get rusted where it slides into the flywheel housing and makes it a real pain to get out. Maybe try soaking it with some PB Blaster for a day. You should be able to see where it slides into the housing. It is a precise fit, so it doesn't take much to get stuck.

Mine slid out without too much force, lucky perhaps...

WOW, A true hammer mechanic. If you can't do it right, get a bigger hammer.

No, there is no auto stater for a 470 engine.

Re: how to remove starter?

IF its a Delco starter,(later 470s) Im reasonably sure the nose cone is common to several automotive starters. Not sure about the earlier Prestolite starters.
