I dont know what motor is best for my boat

I have a 1970'S Thermolite 14ft that i just recently aquaired. I need a short shaft motor but i have no idea what kind of horsepower i should put on it to reach decent speeds. The metal plate that should be one the transom to tell me what the max hp is has been removed by the previous owner. Any suggestions ?

It a glass vee hull it weighs about 200-225 pounds and it is baby blue on white

Tiller operated, 20-30hp.<br /><br />If it has a steering wheel, 25-35hp.

Don't you think that's a little low? My 14' Aluminium is rated for 40hp and is fine with the 50hp I've got on it, and it's a light boat.<br />Eric

I've got a 15 foot glass trihull, also baby blue, rated for 85, runs upwards of 40mph with 70.<br /><br />If possible, it'd be great to see it on the trailer behind the Farrarri...

I just salvaged the boat from a local public boat launch where it was sumbmerged so after i get it cleaned up and cut polished i will post a few pics. hopfully by saturday

14' v hull, 200#, from the 70's.<br /><br />We don't know the beam, the transom width, the design, tiller or wheel.<br />Yeah, lots of 14' or 15' boats out there with lots bigger motors, but most of them will weigh more, be trihull or cathedral hull, have a wide beam, and a stable platform to hold a big heavy motor.<br /><br />I could show you 14' v hull glass boats that are rated for 20hp max.<br /><br />So, without a lot more info, I won't recommend more hp.

yeah... BUT, it is blue and white, the right there easily adds the ability to swing maybe 10 more hp.

Wow, what a coincidence my blue and white 14ft F/G 350Lb boat has an extra 10HP on it and its a fun ride. Nice and stable and quick. Rated for 30HP and I have a 40HP mariner on it. Glad I choose the blue color over the red

Red boats don't need to have 10hp extra, <br />They are fast enough already..... <br /><br />But blue and white? <br />I guess 10Hp more will help them keep up.....

Thanks for all your help, when i was cleaning the boat i found the metal plate stuckto the bottom of one of the gas tanks. Its rated for fifty hp, but one more question, What year is it? Its model # is z-140-50

On a serious note, all jokes aside, Be aware that the Max hp rating is not always the best engine that will work with that boat. Sometimes a smaller engine will outperform the larger engine. <br /><br />Since you salvaged it, have you checked the transom and floor for rot? Do you know how long it was under? It maybe very possible that the transom will fall apart if you put any engine on at all.

Some states it is easy to get a tittle for A salvage boat I don't know about yours. Tim
