Check the linkage, and drain lower unit into a pan. Run your finger thru the lube, and feel for chunks.
If you got chunks, gear damage
If you got no chunks, recheck linkage.
under carb, at the base of the cowl, is a knuckle with gears on it. Have someone work the control, while you observe this knuckle. If it is moving into revese, you may have a sheared shift shaft...Yesh (srry I had to do that). In order to do this, you must drop the lower unit,as per directions in the manual.

The shift shaft has spline teeth on the end of it. Inspect these teeth for missing, worn, or twisted teeth.

The most common cause of merc gearcases losing reverse is wear to the shift cam and follower combined with wear to the shift clutch and mating teeth on the reverse gear. If you are lucky you can get away with changing the shift cam and follower only. These parts are not expensive and not too big a job to change. Often if you change the shift clutch also you will correct the problem without the expense of replacing the gear set. These are all internal parts of the gearcase though so special tools are required for disassembly and assembly.
