i have to replace my shift cable

hi all, this is what ive done, tell me if i have missed something.
my new to me 2005 Glastron with 3.0l VP and sx drive is difficult shifting into reverse and REALLY difficult shifting back to neutral.

so i disconnected the linkage to the carby to isolate the gear shift cable, and its still stiff i was fairly confident it could be the gear cable, so next i disconnected it at the out drive ( under the cover) and tested how easy it was to shift the gears at the drive itself, and it was easy, so then i disconnected the cable at the hand control unit and now the handle controller is easy to move, so with the gear selector cable disconnected at both ends i tried moving it, and i could barley move it at all.

i greased everything up and tried to spray wd40 into the cable, and thats made a marginal improvement maybe 5%

so i guess the cable has to come out and be replaced, ive read that tele flex make an extreme cable and that this is the one to use.

can anyone give me any pointers on how the removal and replacement is done, i guess i have to get the old one out and measure before i even know what length i will need, where do i start can it be feed through from the inner transon to the out drive or does it all have to come apart??

any comments greatly appreciated

Yes, that teleflex cable is a good one.

You can't lube these cables. Only solution is to replace.

Sometimes you can look at the cable housing near either end and it will have the length on the cable housing.

My shift cable did the same thing...hard to get out of reverse, but moved freely from the drive end. I made a coupler to attach the new cable to the old and pulled the new one in as I pulled the old one out. I used some KY jelly on the cable when pushing it thru the sleeve to the drive. My shift cable is 34' long.

Make sure the new cable doesn't have any sharp bends in it. That causes them to wear out and bind up inside really quick. And don't tie the cables down within 3 feet of the control that also causes them to bind.

I'll bet you can find a number on one end or the other. You can't read the number in the pic, but you can see it at the bottom in white. These cables are a common item here at marine stores in many different lengths.

Re: i have to replace my shift cable

Generally both sides of the cable sheathing will have a model number which includes the length. The TFXtreme cables are a great product that's what I went with. I tied nylon cord to my original cable to help feed the new one in but I ended up not needing it. I just manually pushed the new cable thru the rubber tubing in the engine compartment. Took all of 5 minutes to do.

water does get into the tube. The end of the tube inside the engine compartment is well above the water line so the water does not travel up and out of it.

Re: i have to replace my shift cable

i got the cable replaced a couple of weeks ago, and this past weekend was the first opportunity i had to try it out, wow what a difference,

so easy to engage drive either forward or reverse, very pleased with the results.

and now that the idle mixture is adjustable this little boat rocks
