Before I start I wanna say I'm completely new to boating I brought this boat about 6 months ago and I knew it needed a new transom .I have a 80 something Cobia Triton 228 ,I wanna say 84?..not too sure on the year but anyways when I rock the motor a little you can see the transom somewhat give out ..its pretty weak .My biggest concern its getting the the wood out . I plan on pouring seacast . I can't be talked out of seacast , I've made my mind on that . How do I get all the wood out ,I understand how to get out most of the wood but how would I get out the wood stuck to the resin and the fiberglass . I was guessing I would have to use some type of chisel or something . but is there a easier way or should I not be too concerned about getting out every last piece of wood . If I end up doing this my self should I put new drain holes in my self or reuse the ones already on the boat . Man , I have alot of questions ....

If anyone of ya'll are from around the Mobile or Baldwin county area and want to help me out , feel free to lend a hand .I'll return the favor if ever needed . Thanks.

If its rotten wood it will not be hard to get all of it out with a crowbar. if its not mushy rotten its a whole different ballgame. Everyone and me are going to want pics! Its the button with the tree in it ( Insert image)

Re: I need transom replacement help

I haven't started on anything yet but these are some pictures of why I think there is damage and rot to the transom
Picture #2 you can see where its starting to make the metal brace bend
Picture #3 you can see how the bottom brace is starting to separate from the side brace due to the weight of the motor pulling on the weak transom
Picture #4 is a hole where the guy before me must of done something stupid and forgot to caulk back the hole he made . I can put my finger in over the hole and push a little bit and it feels like mushy wood ...

Re: I need transom replacement help

I've been doing research and I saw this guy's videos on youtube and I'm guessing this would be the best way for me to get all the wood out using a rotary rasp .http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtxrNP6_K1M
. Any other suggestions or tips to repair my transom.

Long drill bit, electric chain saw, shop vac.

Looks like the ideal candidate for SeaCast.

If the Transom is that bad, R U certain the rest of the substructure is sound. Usually, but not always, if a transom is bad, the stringers will have some rot as well. If you don't want to remove the deck and do the transom then your method is the way to go. EZ is spot on about the Chainsaw and Drill. You can get 3 ft extensions for wood spade bits that will allow you to get down to every crevice. You should make every attemp to remove as much wood as possible. Seal up the holes with tape and pour boiling water in to soften the wood and then drill and chainsaw it out.
This iBoater did a great Seacast Transom

Re: I need transom replacement help

There is no "easy" fix for a bad transom. I cant believe you have stated "I cant be talked out of using Seacast". Doing a quickie job may pay you back one day when the engine shears the transom 4 miles offshore, the sea starts pouring in and you and your passengers start putting on lifejackets. There is only one way to fix a rotten transom and that is to completely remove all rotten wood. You need to verify that the rot has not migrated into the ends of the stringers where they butt against the transom. The best method is to lift the deck assembly off the hull and rebuild, or take it to a pro and let them do it.
