Can someone identify the following OMC serial number. It is on a small, rope-start, tiller outboard.

4156-01878

Thanks. & my Mom (Bless Her Soul) who gave it to me when I was 10, more than fifty years ago, thanks you too.

Its a 1936 Evinrude Sportwin, 2 cylinder, short shaft 2.5 HP.

Here's SN 03339, made later that year:

Wow! Thanks. That was quick, so I assume it was pretty common.

That's definitely it, but mine never had the fancy stuff on the tank.

It doesn't say Evinrude or Sportwin on it anywhere, just Outboard Motor Corporation on the tag. Is that the way it should be?

I just googled it and see that there were three models . . . Sportsman ($55), Fisherman ($110), and Lightfour ($167.50), plus the Sportwin ($77).

The story behind it:

When I was a kid we used to rent a cottage on Clear Lake in northern Iowa. I was 10-ish, and would row a boat out to the middle of the lake and use cut bait to fish by myself. I guess my mom felt sorry for me so she bought this motor from the guy who owned the cottages (Gherke, or something like that). It was next to Hanson's PM Marine in PM Park on the south shore.

That would have been 1959-60-ish. Here's a picture from that era of a walleye caught with a Moose Fly (tied by Moose Hanson):

I last ran it in 1981. It is not in running condition now because it has been sitting idle.

Any value to it unrestored?

Thanks again.

Let's move this to the JohnnyRude Forum, now that we know that she is an Evinrude.

Wow! $77 in 1936 equates to: $1,222.96 in 2011.

That's pretty pricey for a depression era item!!!

I paid $35 for mine about 5 years ago. It didn't run either, but it was an easy fix - it only neded a new coil. The pic shows it after it was fully restored. Restoiration cost about 100 bucks. If the "fancy stuff" you referred to is the gold decal, that is how it would have looked when it came from the factory. When you got it it was 20+ years old, so the decal was likely worn off.

Demand for antiques had been rising, but in the last year or so it kinda leveled off. Prices are all over the map and vary by location. E.g., salt water motors aren't worth much. Yours isn't particularly rare, but its not one you find too often either.

Your motor might bring $50 at a garage sale, or it could bring $200 if you sold on e-bay. However, to go that route is a hassle with all the shipping and packing required.

What you have there is a labour of love. No real money to be made in restoring her, other than the attention you'll recieve putting through your local marina/river/harbour etc...

There is a site dedicated to that vintage outboard, the aomci.org (antique outboard motor club). There is a wealth of free information, and best of all, guidance from guys that also collect/restore these beauties. Beware, it becomes addictive.

If you do decide to clean her up let me know, I can help you out with a new decal for her.

Is she free or locked up?
