Ignition switch help

Hi guys and girls
I'm in the process of changing the Ignition switch on my boat, but before I set the thing on fire, I just want to make sure I do this right

My boat, 1979 Aquasport, it came with a 1979 Johnson 85hp #85TL79, I since then re powered with a 1983 70hp Evinrude, tanks for the help of tashasdady it was a blug and play affair

Lately I was having an hard time with my ignition switch, guess it had to much millage on it, so decided to change it. Got a new one, the physical shape of it is the same, but the connection in the back and the layout is not quite the same, same amount of connectors(6), one is lettered as a(I) instead of (S)
Should I connect the wire that suppose to connect the (S) terminal onto the (I )terminal ?

are you sure you have an A and not an s? the new one i just bought for my 81 johnson had m,m,s,b,i,c.

If, with an ohm meter, there is continuity between the "B" and "I" terminals ONLY when the key is turned to the START position, then you may consider the "I" terminal the same as the "S" terminal.

BUT if there is still continuity between those two terminals (B/I) when the key is in the ON position, DO NOT use that switch as this would keep the starter solenoid engaged as long as the key is ON.

If the labels are not the same, then what are the labels on each terminal for the switch you have now (again, I can't get that photo to open for some reason)?

Looks like I'm going to need another switch, did the continuity test and there still continuity between b/I when on ON position

Evinrude/JOhnson's 508180 is the last good part number of the switch you need. The picture in Sierra's catalog shows their 18-1802 to be the same as the 508180.

If the new switch doesn't have the exact terminal placement and identification markings as your original switch, walk away from it.

That weird one you have pictured above..... I've never seen one like that. Curious as to where you got it and why?

apparently it was the switch I needed, he had no pictures from the back, so I couldn't see the layout of the terminals, plus it was cheap , my bad

Installed the new one, that I got from a local marine store but end up paying $45 bucks (rip off), at least it's working now

Don't know what the problem was viewing the photo, it just wouldn't load no matter no matter how many time I tried yesterday. But it's fine this morning. Like they say, a picture is worth a thousand words.

$45 may sound like a lot, but as you can see, sometimes a great bargain is not so great. I wonder what the switch was originally designed to do since it did not have any momentary on (starter) terminal. Odd

At least you figured it out without first frying something on you motor. Good call, Joe!
