As y'all know, I quitired (quit my job and retired) in January. I then had to buy my own insurance with a high deductible. That's when I started falling apart.

At my yearly physical I told my doctor that I felt something was wrong in my abdomen. He ordered an MRI and we found out that I had two abdominal aortic aneurisms and a stenosis in my leg. That means I'm either going to blow out a vessel or plug up my leg with a clot. That was diagnosed in May.Nothing to do with that except watch and wait.

In June I go on a week fishing trip to Minnesota. I felt terrible the entire week. When I get home I get put into the hospital for my first time ever. My blood glucose level was 959. Yep. I'm now a Type I diabetic taking 4 insulin shots a day.

Here I work my entire life and take 3 sick days in 22 years. I quit smoking last year, quit drinking and quit work and NOW I fall apart. Oh well, life happens. At least I've got some health insurance, not great, but some.

I know it's not that bad but I just wanted to vent to my iboat friends.

Hey Tyme, I feel for ya man! "959!" and you're still alive? But, You're a type 2 diabetic, same as I am. Type 1 means you were born with it. I got it at age 50, 12yrs ago. Two months later, I got my 1st cardiac stent :( I test, & take 4 shots a day too, before brkfst, lunch, dinner, bdtime, it has gotten worse over the yrs, because I cheat, I can't help it  My biggest issue is I can't stand any of the diatetic sugars, I can taste them a mile away. The best thing you can do is lose weight, esp. if you're heavy like me. I'm at a plateau now  Bayer is giving away free meters, just go online, or call them, in case you need one? Cinnamon is your friend, as well as Chromium picolinate 400mcg a day. Once you level off, you may not have to take as many shots for maintenance. Exercise, or physical work, will burn off the sugar. Losing weight will turn your diabetes around, maybe cure it if you lose enough. You have been dealt some low blows by life, I think maybe you should go back to drinkin, smokin, & work!,,, er!,,, forget about that last one! :D Good Luck Mike

Type 1 diabetes (previously known as insulin-dependent diabetes)
Type 1 diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the body's immune system destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. This type of diabetes, also known as juvenile-onset diabetes, accounts for 10-15% of all people with the disease. It can appear at any age, although commonly under 40, and is triggered by environmental factors such as viruses, diet or chemicals in people genetically predisposed. People with type 1 diabetes must inject themselves with insulin several times a day and follow a careful diet and exercise plan.

This is what the doctor said I have. Type I

Sorry to hear about all your issues there. T2f. But now that your retired you have plenty of time to take care of yourself. :):)Besides living with those problems sure beats the alternative.:p;):D

I guess it could be, but I was under the impression that after 40, it was called Type 2? My body still makes insulin, but it doesn't get used by the cells the right way. I am early retired also from commercial construction with other medical issues, and I was living ok, until this gas crisis hit. By the way, It does help to vent, and you get to see people in a similar situation as you, that can identify with you.

T2F, the first couple of months are tuff just because of changing your bad habits for better ones, like I said been one for 10 years and I am on no drugs. It can be done but not overnite takes a little (ok alot) willpower.I lost a friend to diabetes he was only 52 but would not take care of himself, it was not pretty site.Learn as much as you can and stay strong.Jim

You might be surprised just how healtly it is to do a little hard exercise. You can do it but it hurt's ....and at the end of the day a nice glass of wine will put you away ..or burbon...depend's on the doc...:)

Re: I'm falling apart

T2F, wife just found out a month or so ago she has type 2.
She was at 718 on her sugar count when we caught it.
We have change our eating habits and the doctor has her on metformin and she is down to 126 at last check this AM.
She takes it 3 times a day and I watch her like a hawk as to what she eats.
Have found out it is not as much as what you eat as it is how much you eat.
Hang in there, we are all pulling for ya.
She uses the freestyle light meter system.

Man, that is too bad... I hope things do get better.

A little humor to cheer you up:
My Dad always says that getting older is better than the alternative. He also says you start life with no teeth, in diapers and can't remember a darn thing and you end life the same way. :D

Look on the bright side ... at least work isn't getting in the way of fishing time! Thoughts and prayers headed your way.

Ain't that the truth. Everyone at work asked me "What will you do with your time?" I seem to be busier now than I was when I worked. No trouble filling up the day.
