This motor has never had cold starting issues but a couple of weeks ago I was showing my son the proper starting technique because I was going to let him start taking it out on his own. I had him put it in neutral and advance the throttle a little then told him to turn the key and hit the primer. The motor never even fired. It always fires. I had him make a few throttle adjustments and it still just turned over and over & never fired.
I let it sit, and tried over and over again. Even tried spraying a little gas in the carbs. When we almost ran the battery down I put her on the charger and tried again the next morning, she fired right up. I wrote it off as a badly flooded motor and did not pay any more attention to it.
Last week I let him take it out for the first time and he said it fired up the first time and ran great untill the return trip down the river. He said he was on plane at about 5000 rpms and the engine quit. He said it restarted but sort of surged on him for a while then ran fine the rest of the afternoon. I sort of wrote the incident off and thought maybe he hit a slug of water in the fuel or something.
So yesterday I installed some new electronics on the boat and when I finished I thought I would turn it over and let it run a few minutes on the muffs. I plan on a couple of days fishing in a couple of weeks with my other son and wanted to see how she was running. I had the same problem we had a couple of weeks ago. Darn near ran the battery down and she never even fired. I pulled the plugs out and they didn't seem wet so I'm not sure if she was not getting gas or not. I did hook up my timing light and she was getting spark.
This morning I went out and she fired right up. I am not sure where to start at this point. I'm thinking if the primer wasn't working she would start sooner or later. If she was flooding I would expect wet plugs. Could it be an intermitent timing problem? Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting?
