I'm not real sure what is going on here

This motor has never had cold starting issues but a couple of weeks ago I was showing my son the proper starting technique because I was going to let him start taking it out on his own. I had him put it in neutral and advance the throttle a little then told him to turn the key and hit the primer. The motor never even fired. It always fires. I had him make a few throttle adjustments and it still just turned over and over & never fired.

I let it sit, and tried over and over again. Even tried spraying a little gas in the carbs. When we almost ran the battery down I put her on the charger and tried again the next morning, she fired right up. I wrote it off as a badly flooded motor and did not pay any more attention to it.

Last week I let him take it out for the first time and he said it fired up the first time and ran great untill the return trip down the river. He said he was on plane at about 5000 rpms and the engine quit. He said it restarted but sort of surged on him for a while then ran fine the rest of the afternoon. I sort of wrote the incident off and thought maybe he hit a slug of water in the fuel or something.

So yesterday I installed some new electronics on the boat and when I finished I thought I would turn it over and let it run a few minutes on the muffs. I plan on a couple of days fishing in a couple of weeks with my other son and wanted to see how she was running. I had the same problem we had a couple of weeks ago. Darn near ran the battery down and she never even fired. I pulled the plugs out and they didn't seem wet so I'm not sure if she was not getting gas or not. I did hook up my timing light and she was getting spark.

This morning I went out and she fired right up. I am not sure where to start at this point. I'm thinking if the primer wasn't working she would start sooner or later. If she was flooding I would expect wet plugs. Could it be an intermitent timing problem? Any suggestions on where to start trouble shooting?

I had a similar hard starting, rough idle, problem last year on 2 different occasions. Both times it was when the fuel tank was less than 1/2 full and the boat sat for a week or more. I finally decided that it was from water drawing into the alcohol in the fuel. I made a point of keeping some of that Marine Stabil or a little Seafoam in the mixed fuel after that and did not have a repeat of the problem. I try to run my tanks almost out and fill up just before the next outing. My motor at the time was a '79 50hp Evinrude.

your primer gets its pressure from the squeeze ball, its simply a valve,so,you may have some issue goin on with the ball, you may think its hard, but might be full of air, thry it first,if you have a gas hose that is not directly connectd an has a clip connection, check for proper connection with no leaks,if yu have a built in tank, make sure vent works ok,if its a built in,and eng surges, open the fill ,it will vent if vent is non functional, then replace

What are we working on?

Sorry it is a 98 115 SPL.
Could very well be a bad fuel issue. I receintly did a rebuild, it sat for a long time before rebuilding the powerhead. I ran the first 7 or 8 hrs on an external tank with double oil and had no issues. I ran a few hours on the old fuel in the boat tank before this problem poped up. The week after July 4th my son is on vacation and I am going to meet him in Sarasota with the boat for a few days fishing. Hope to have all the old fuel run out and a fresh tank by then. I'm trying to run as much of this old fuel out as I can before filling up so I don't end up mixing a bunch of old fuel with the new tank of gas.

I realize I should have pumped out the old gas from the start but I really didn't have a way of disposing of 60 gallons of fuel not to mention no easy way of pumping out the tank. I'm not convinced this is a bad fuel issue though. When I have had the starting problems simply letting her sit and trying again the next day seems to cure the problem.
