I installed a new impeller kit on my 82 mariner 50 HP 4cyl 2 stroke. No water came out when I started it. Is it because I missed the small hole that the water tube goes in or do I have the impeller going the wrong direction? Many thanks for help, Chris

16' lund
50 HP Mariner

Re: impeller installation

T-stat = Thermostat. The impeller vanes will be in the correct orientation the minute you fire it up. Did it always have water out the tell tale at idle on muffs? Did you run it long enough for it to warm up? The t-stat won't open right away.

Re: impeller installation

I used to pee out a nice stream fairly quickly at idle with the muffs on, maybe I missed the hole with the long water pipe when I was installing the lower unit?! Thanks, Chris

Re: impeller installation

That motor does not have a thermostat. If you are not getting water from the peepee hole, then you did something wrong. Impellors only spin one way, so there was no way to get it backwards.

Look inside the housing for pieces of rubber from previous impellors, make sure all the little passages under the impellor plate ( dont know the tech term) are clean. Make sure the "key" is in the impellor so that it will spin when the shaft is spinning. Lastly make sure that you have the pickup tube properly inserted.

To make re-assembley easier, put the motor in forward before dropping the lower unit. That way there is no guess work when it come to lining up gears.

I thought you could put an inpellar in wrong. Don't the vanes have to be bent in the same direction as the old one? Will the vanes change direction on their own if you put it in wrong?
Thanks, Dead Eye

That's what i said earlier, they will be right the minute you start it.

Re: impeller installation

Most impellors come with straight vanes, to prevent putting them in wrong. They will bend the direction as needed as soon as the shaft turns.

Should be installed like this.
Nathan is right.. they are straight, but you gotta bend em to get them in.

Re: impeller installation

But even if you bend them the wrong direction, they will flip right over to the right direction the minute you hit the key. Everyone get it now?
