Inboard Starter confusion

I have an older Pleasurecraft 5.7 going into a boat I am building. I have started to get it ready to install and the starter is dead. I have removed it, tested it, definitely dead. Yes, I can bar over the engine . . . It drags real hard and trips breakers on the test stand  The PCM part number is RA 122009 and it is referred to as a Top Mount, rear starter, CCW. The engine is standard rotation, so the starter, entering from the rear, actually turns opposite of conventional "front mount" starters (CW) I've been poking around at different options. While I could get this one rebuilt (still might), I have been searching out new ones too.

So here's my question. How is it possible that this style:

Can replace this style:

 Do you simply end up with the flywheel and ring gear exposed?

You answered your own question. If you want to switch the type of starter you have from a top mount, rear, ccw, to a standard rotation, well that's how you do it. You are going to have to make some changes.
One of those starters isnt a replacement dor the other, but either of them can be made to work. ASSUMING you have the clearance for the standard starter under the motor.
What kind of driveline are you putting in?

It's a Velvet drive (direct drive). This is a Chris Craft replica. Never been wet. I was not planning on switching to conventional mount. Both of those starters are supposedly rear, top mount CCW's. The point really only being the non-covered pinion.

Ayuh,...

Edited....

The top 1 has a stouter main bearing so the bushing in the nose cone isn't needed...

You will have to get a smaller flywheel converting to inline starters. We had to when we swapped our merc 350CID's over to inline from rear mounted.

Gear reduction, newest technology from everywhere starters are made.

I'm kind of in a hijacking mood tonight . . . I've mentioned this a little. My Nephew works over at Magic/Sleek's semi-separate service department. The builder is going BK. He says there are around 50+ new Stage 3 boats (everything but power) about to be liquidated, all go fasts, Cats and V-hulls. Mannnnn, I really, really want a Sleek Heritage 26. Dream, but where the heck are they all going to go? Would be an awesome project for next winter . . . Maybe I should finish this project first   And maybe find some cash . . . Yeah, better plan.

About your nephews co. that he works for, they didn't see problems coming and still kept a big , inventory of hulls and such ??

I mean not to demean them in any way, but a smart business person sees bad economic times coming they order what they need for the next 3-4 months or on a job by job basis.

Or go to a custom order boat system not stock pile all kinds of stuff they don't need. Makes you wonder even if this was a good economy, if that company was making good business decisions, and would have folded anyway.

Just my 2 cents.
