I have an older Pleasurecraft 5.7 going into a boat I am building. I have started to get it ready to install and the starter is dead. I have removed it, tested it, definitely dead. Yes, I can bar over the engine . . . It drags real hard and trips breakers on the test stand
The PCM part number is RA 122009 and it is referred to as a Top Mount, rear starter, CCW. The engine is standard rotation, so the starter, entering from the rear, actually turns opposite of conventional "front mount" starters (CW) I've been poking around at different options. While I could get this one rebuilt (still might), I have been searching out new ones too.
So here's my question. How is it possible that this style:

Do you simply end up with the flywheel and ring gear exposed?
