Re: Installing New Propeller

It's always nice to have as much advice as possible from all you experienced boaters. I hit Walmart this afternoon thinking I could find some grease for the prop shaft. Although they had small tubes of marine grease it looked like it was more for trailer bearings than anything else.

The Merc owners manual calls for anti-corrosion grease, or special lubricant 101, or 2-4-C with Teflon. I'm sure I can find one of those at the boat dealership.

I also went to the bookstore (Barnes & Noble) thinking I'd be able to find a SELEC or Clymer manual. They didn't have either one. Amazon or eBay here I come. Take care and thanks again for all the good advice.

Regards,
Steve

ziggy,

Manual says Stern Drives 1985-95 Repair Manual and covers OMC Cobra, King Cobra, and Cobra SX. It covers up to 5.7L engines.

Could be it is not valid for this boat. Need someone with a lot more knowledge than me for that.

I can say that if the original manufactures spec is different that is what I would go with, not the number I got from SELOC.

Re: Installing New Propeller

steve. ask yer dealer about the service manual whilest yer getting the grease ya need. bet he will be able to you with that too i'd think.

what drive do you have steve? from intuition, i guess i make an assumtion that the 4.3L would have a alpha1 gen2. but ya know what they say about assumptions. maybe you have a Volvo. i'm also guessing that you also don't have a omc as i don't think they make em any more and your boat is brand new.

hope yer prop comes in asap and the weather is good next weekend. we got rained out this one. if ya gotta be w/o a prop, this was the weekend to be without......

Ziggy:

I hear you! We need the rain but it's nice it was here when I couldn't be on the water.

I do have the Mercury 4.3 liter V-6 (not fuel injected) with a Mercruiser Alpha One sterndrive (not sure if it is a Gen 2 though) rated at 190 HP. According to UPS, the prop is in Omaha. I'm hoping it gets delivered today or tomorrow. I will hopefully get it installed before this weekend.

I will follow your advice and check with the dealership on the service manual. Hope to see you on the water soon.

Steve

steve, i think i just read a post from don s about identifying gen2 from alpha1. believe it said that the gen2 has bolts that hold the upper to the lower. not studs with nuts only.......

bet you'll have that prop on in 15 or 20 min. once ya start turning wrenches....see ya soon.... jim

Re: Installing New Propeller

Ziggy:

I stopped at the dealership to buy some 2-4-C with Teflon lube for the prop shaft. The parts department guy showed me how to change a prop on one of the boats in the showroom with an Alpha One. I thought that was nice. Now that I've seen how it's done you're right. A few minutes and I'm back in the game. The prop didn't get delivered today so I'm hoping tomorrow for sure. That way I can get out to Offutt AFB (where it's stored) and put it on before the weekend. I'll do some looking around here on info concerning Gen I and Gen II sterndrives. Not that important but it would be nice to know just in case.

Steve

Re: Installing New Propeller

All, You guys are flippin' out . . . :D JackL's torque number and manual are for an OMC, he definitely does not have a Volvo and if you have a S/N go here and you can find out what drive he has, but it is a Gen II.

http://mercruiserparts.stemtostern.com/MercruiserParts/mercruisermodels2.asp

Scuba, KnotAddicted is wise to recommend you watch out for the thrust washer sticking to the prop (with or without flo-torq IMHO). If you ever change in the water (almost as easy unless the water is cold) and drop the thrust washer in the water, you are fooked. You should keep a spare set of hardware for this and other possibilities and have your damaged prop repaired for a spare. This solves the problem when you damage it in the beginning of the day ;)

Re: Installing New Propeller

Quietcat:

Thanks for the tip. My new prop did get delivered yesterday so all the advice from everybody is timely. The prop did come with a hub kit and since my original thrust washer only has 6 hours on it I'm hoping I can keep that one as an extra. The new Merc prop also came with a free Merc emergency prop (yellow plastic). It will be nice to have an extra prop to be used just for an emergency. I hope to install the new prop Friday night and be out on the water Saturday. I did buy a tube of 2-4-C to lube everything well. Thanks again.

Regards,
Steve

Re: Installing New Propeller

Okay everybody, now I feel like a real dumb a$$ for asking how to install a prop. I just finished putting on the new 14 x 23 and it really couldn't have been easier. A little 2-4-C to coat everything well and a 2 x 4 to keep the prop from turning and I was all done.

Thanks to all for your advice and input. I guess I shouldn't feel dumb asking for the first time as safety is always number 1 and all the input I received made sure this job was done right. THANK YOU!

Ziggy:

It doesn't look like I'll be making it out to Branched Oak this weekend. My wife has to work tomorrow and I've got to be somewhere on Sunday. Maybe next weekend. If you're going out have a great time!

Steve

Re: Installing New Propeller

steve, cool that ya got yer new prop ontoit. don't feel too bad about the prop questions. i felt just like you the first time i took mine off. which wasn't that long ago.

bummer to hear yer weekend isn't working out. i'm sure your looking real forward to trying out that new screw. something like that you might have to make some time in the middle of the week, even if just for a few hours. ;)

we'll cross paths yet steve. i do hope to get out this weekend, but am disappointed that i will be pwcing and not boating. i just keep finding things wrong with my speedboat. this time it's the shift cable adj. one thing after another. but i suppose in the end i will get the problems fixed, just not as soon as i would like. be seein ya soon. jim

I haven't read all the posts here but I can give you one peice of advice use a board under the cavitation plate to keep the prop from turning while you loosen or tighten the prop nut.

Re: Installing New Propeller

Shadowdwpp:

Great advice! I actually got the prop on early last week. One of the guys at the boat delaership showed me how to replace it on one of their demo boats and he said the exact same thing about the board. I had a 20 inch piece of 2 x 4 that worked perfect for keeping the prop in place.

Thanks for the advice.

Steve
