Careful all, if stopped in Garland or Dallas Texas and you forgot your insurance card, they now tow your vehicle. Ouch!! not me but others. Seems they have had enough of the uninsured.

Re: Insurance card

LOL, did you hear about how it is 'rascist' to tow unisured cars? Seems according to some at the Dallas Morning News and at least one city council member, it singles out illegal immigrants and poor people.

The logic on the illegals is that they cant get a license to drive, so they cant get insurance. Since they cant get insurance, its disciminatory to tow their vehicle. So they broke the law to get here, broke the law by driving without a license and broke the law by not having insurance and its our fault???

Man that would stink. I dont know how many times I have driven around without putting my new insurance card in the car.

What I find really funny is that the police except a piece of paper with numbers and letters on it as "proof".

I cound renew my insurance for free in about 5 minutes with a scanner and photoshop.

Ken

An interesting situation. To card or not to card, that is the question? Tis it nobler in the mind to include the card or go the to the impound lot? ;) Actually, I carry mine in my wallet. 'course I don't live in Texas. I live in CA, where our rights are "safeguarded" wahhhahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhqahahahaha

Re: Insurance card

Problem, if I have insurance on my car but I am driving yours and I do not know where your card is, is the car I am driving insured. Cops don't know and I leave my card in my car.

Also, card does not mean c..p, get in a wreck and see how many times the card represents they had insurance.

Don't you feel towing of the car a bit radical. Must be something here that has been left out. What if I have an expired card and a policy in effect. Should the car be towed?

Re: Insurance card

That is harsh. I understand the logic, if you don't have insurance and they let you drive home, you wreck on the way then it would of course be the cops fault for not protecting the driver from themselves.
BUT most people do have insurance, just not a card. Mine is usually on the counter by the back door for a month before it goes to the car.

And yes it is easy to get a card. Insur a car for a week, then drop it. Or just get creative on a computer and print your own. That happens a lot.
The insurance companies need a database that will tie in with the DMV files. We can check those files for insurance, that way for people like me and 99% of others on the road that lose their cards they are safe.

I usually write a ticket for no insurance. Give them their copy and a stamped envelope with my address. If they send me a copy of their insurance card within 5 days proving they were covered on the day of the ticket, I tear up the ticket. If I don't hear from them then the ticket goes to the courts.

Re: Insurance card

In Kentucky, if you cancel or let your insurnace expire, a letter is sent to the DMV by the insurance company and they can/will come and take the tags off the car untill such time you come up with proof of insurance again.

Re: Insurance card

You do not have to have your insurance details with you when you drive in the UK.
If you are stoped you are required to produce identification which will be checked on the spot by the officer either using on board systems or via radio. If your ID and the registration of the car you are driving stacks up the officer will issue a ticket that requires you to produce you documents at a police station within 7 days, you then have 7 days to take your documents to your local police station where they will be recorded and checked, all licence information, insurance policies and MOT certificates are stored in a single database.
It is a criminal offence not to produce the required documentation.

Re: Insurance card

SBN, Actually car I am driving is insured as the policy language is:

You and your family members covered in ANY automobile.
So the car I am driving is insured.

SBN, You are correct about Kentucky and plates are pulled. Insurance lobby to strong in many states (Including mine, Texas) and stop all efforts to make them responsible to report cancellations.

Texas statistics reveal 43% of drivers on our roads are uninsured. In valley up to 73% is estimated.

Hopefully, we can get a legislature, governor and supreme court that is not in debt (political contributions) to the insurance industry.

Yes Kentucky it does work.

You get a ticket my insurance dont cover you. Your Insurance covers you even while driving my car. So make sure whoever you loan your car to has insurance. Thats what state farm tells me on my auto ins. policy.

Re: Insurance card

What Ms law requires
Beginning January 1, 2001, Mississippi law requires that all drivers maintain liability insurance and carry a card in their vehicles at all times showing that you have liability insurance. Technically, you, as a Mississippi driver, can legally satisfy these requirements by:

Showing proof of liability insurance with bodily injury and property damage limits at least equal to the minimum requirement.

Posting a bond for these same amounts.

Making a cash or security deposit equal to the minimum requirements.

Maintaining it in your vehicle is now the law. The initial penalty for failing to maintain an insurance card is $1,000 dollars and suspension of driving privileges for one year or until the motor vehicle owner shows proof of insurance.
Minimum penalty for failing to maintain proof of coverage in the covered vehicle is $100 dollars.
