Internal Anode Removal

I have a 1987 Yamaha 90 ETLH motor and am in the process of replacing just about every part above the head above the block due to severe corrosion. I suppose the prior owner did not believe in maintenance as large chunks of metal were totally gone. While I have the head off, I would like to replace the two internal anodes but they seem to be corroded in place. I managed to get the screws out using an impact driver. I'm thinking I might have to resort to a small drill or something. I have already purchased the new screws and anodes and notice they have an odd shape with long legs that protrude into the block. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, I would like to thank Rodbolt, Ray, JB and other excellent minds who post on this iboat forum. I've come a long way in a few weeks of wrenching on this thing and have certainly gotten tremendous benefit from doing nothing but reading the good advice. Thanks again to all!

Never Mind. I just got a small diameter drill bit and drilled down the two long legs and then increased the bit size progressively. New ones fit in without problem and I sealed the screws with perfect seal.

I've got a '88 90hp and I've read that our motors have a carbon steel shiftrod that's prone to twisting in two. The newer models have a stainless one. If you're up to pullling the powerhead it may be worthwhile to replace it.

I had a heck of a time this past spring pulling the lower unit off to replace the original impeller. Corrosion had practically welded it onto the studs. My head and water jacket cover were crusty too. I did a halfway decent job cleaning them with dishwasher cleaner (concentrated acetic acid I think) and a brush. I've read that the best approach is sandblasting followed by lightly machining the mating surfaces.
