I know it is illegal to have on a car

I can't imagine why they would be? Almost all boats with helms down here in FL have them. Even little 14' skiffs with 20-30- hp motors.

I can't imagine having a "Suicide knob" on the helm of a small boat. However, they are not addressed in the regs and I doubt a LEO would stop you for that.

Legal or not, I don't see the purpose. Seems like it would make it harder to steer.

As I recall from my high school days, the purpose is to have a place to display pictures of naked babes.

I have to ask - why? Even with a non power steer 19 ft boat I can spin it with one thumb in the spokes

suicide knobs are cheap. Ebay, specialty auto stores, or if you don't mind a John Deere logo, the JD dealerships always carry them..

I think they were made illegal with auto's when it was deemed that they could kill you in a crash. Now, the cars that needed them also had solid mounted steering columns that did not move very easy and did not collapse, so you were going to die anyway..

These are by far the most popular style on big and small boats. Lots of guys will also get decorative parachord wrappings too.
