Re: Is it just me?

I'm a new guy here on iboats. I stumbled onto the forum several weeks ago while looking for help with a wiring problem and found a great resourse and some really knowledgable people. So far I've seen the usual range of personalities you encounter on forums, you have your pro's, you have your smartasses, you got your guys who just want it fixed for free, etc... I'm amazed by the amount of people who post here that have no mechanical knoweldge or nautical knoweldge and expect someone on here to fix their problem. I'm 41 now and I look at the younger guys of the nintendo era and wonder how the hell they manage to do anything. If it's not compleatly spelled out for them they are lost and panic and some seam really ungrateful when they do get help. I think the next generation is lazy and expects everyone else to do everything for them. What ever happend to common sense and fixing your own stuff? I'm a disabled vet and have allot of time on my hands which is why you guys have seen me posting here allot. I also have allot of experiance with marine stuff (15 year naval vet as an engineering rating) so after finding this forum I figured I'd stick around and help when I could since I recieved help here and I enjoy it. One thing some posters forget is that this is a public forum, not a marine service shop and they forget that the answers they get are based on other peoples experiances (with the exception of a few actual marine mech's) so expect a quick turnaround and an expert answer to their questions. They also forget that nobody here is obligated to answer anything if they don't want to:) For myself, I comment only on stuff I actually have any experiance with or training on, you wont see me, for example, giving advice on I/O since I've never owned one, but I will, for example, comment of common sense stuff like fuel lines and filters evan if they are on an I/O boat. If someone want's to flame, I ignore them and I try to act like a stand up guy and appreciate the same in return. I really appreciate all the people on this forum, there is a ton of great knoweldge and experiance here and forum's like these are a great help to boaters everywhere. I say treat everyone with respect and ignore the one's who want be @$$ holes:)

Maybe some relation to the increased need for instant gratification, and a concomitant lack of patience.
I am astonished at the number of posts that I see :=>

I blame it on a generational thing........ the newest generation of boat new comer's were raised on the internet. Many never learned to do anything w/o the net......... to some it is unheard of.

Trust me you are not the only one seeing the change ;)
Welcome back fireman57 (from a newbie) :p

A little off boats but in the same vein. I have a 21 yr. old young man working for me in the shop of a used car dealership, a full time automotive student at a local jr college. Sharp as a tack, always on time, couldn't ask for a better employee.

But.....being "old school" and believing that you learn by doing and making lots of mistakes, I try to leave him alone as much as possible. Whenever I give him a job that he is "stumped" by the first thing he does is jump on the computer to a automotive forum to try and solve it. When I catch him at this I  and say that computer is not going to fix that car, look at it and figure it out for yourself.

I agree with JB. A majority of the issues are due to the seasonal incease in activity.

However, I have noticed a slight lean, or should I say list:rolleyes:, toward impatience over the last few years.

Your right a computer is a great tool but it is a tool.

Sometimes I feel that some of the older/knowledgeable members are tiring of mostly the same questions just worded differently. I also see lots of people (not just on this site) looking for the one in a million answer. I think most people are very courteous but don't want to spend the money they don't have and that,s why there here.

When I first came across this site I asked If the out board motor I had was a good motor(not really knowing out boards). The first answer I got was it would make a better anchor. Ya I was a little frustrated with that remark.

Re: Is it just me?

I've been seeing this all over the internet the last few years. I frequent a few specialty forums for older pickup trucks and some small engine forums. Everyone wants a reply yesterday, bumping within an hour, and generally being passive aggressive to those that try to help.

My favorites are those that actually reply before disappearing with "NVM I fixed it". Really? Could you tell the rest of the class what it was so we can learn too?

I'm only 28, and even I see a huge difference in the last ten years.:(

Re: Is it just me?

I've been around a couple years and I have to say I now spend about an hour a day on iboats, it works nicely for insomnia and avoiding work. I remember my first post here. I couldn't believe people actually answered my question. I'd like to think I've thrown out a little helpful advice here and there, it's rewarding when somebody asks something that I have experience with. It does seem that some people get a little fired up when it's not needed. I've read posts where an intended joke or sarcasm were taken literally. Typing lacks voice inflection and I know I haven't figured out how to add the smiley faces yet. The forum also lacks the ability to smooth things over with a beer.

But I appreciate all you guys do on this forum and plan to stick around as long as the boat still floats (I re-did most of my boat before finding this site, so you never know). Of course if it sinks I guess I'll just buy another one and post pictures of the restoration.

Re: Is it just me?

I've had a few disagreements here from time to time, although nothing serious. I think some disagreeing from time to time is healthy and can lead to new ideas. Many people are very set in their ways and that's okay. If somones has done a certain task for years and had good success with it I can understand why they would stress doing it thier way. I try to offer advice on subjects I know about (which aren't too many), but try to keep an open mind.

I think you're never too old to learn and try to look at every post with an open mind (try to at least). I think my only pet peeve is the posters that ask a question and before a response can be made they have already completed that task and moved to another, and posted a new question about the new task. I sort of feel like if you're going to move forward without the answers then why bother asking.

The ones that get mad because they didn't hear what they wanted, really don't bother me at all. I just don't respond to those anymore.

Been using it for 5 years with some minor headaches.

Well, if you used a chain and the correct amount of rode you wouldn't have ANY headaches. Ay caramba! Don't know what to do with you guys sometimes! Now, if you'll kindly excuse me I must go prepare my sermon.:p

Re: Is it just me?

To be completely honest I have pretty much ended giving any advice anymore, I agree that some disagreements are good but I have had enough, anymore I just come around to have a little light humor with the few like minded individuals or advice from those that I have huge respect for like Fireman, VH or Incoop, the Canadians or the Mods. Too many are set in their ways or are for whatever reason not willing to think about what they are saying or how its coming across, I keep reminding people that while its the internet being clear on what a person says/means can be difficult and that sarcasm may not come across right, its always better to have an open mind then to immediately flame someone. That said I find that I need to take a break from these larger boards to keep from going off and iboats is no exception to me. It is a great site filled with an enormous wealth of knowledge and some great people, but like any other large board it has its share of .........."characters".

I should add that there is one that I think deserves a large amount of credit for his epic rebuilds and thats Frisco Boater, Jay is either 90% glutton for punishment or completely out of his mind but I have to hand it to him, I respect his work ethic and his willingness to help others so much its hard to explain

Re: Is it just me?

As bad as it is on some boards, I don't see the same negativity or willingness to bash fellow boaters on iBoats as I've seen on some other forums. You shouldn't have to make grown men (and women) behave like adults, but all too common people tend to behave like spoiled children.....to me that gets old quickly.

Kudos to the mods/management for keeping things under control. That and the vast wealth of knowledge is what has been bringing me back to this site.

I guess were are a bundle package.;) :D

But you right for the most part, lately I am here for the entertainment factor because some people here are truly fun to banter with.
And at this time, I really need a laugh or ten a day.

Just keepen it lighthearted.

(I now await the Incoop sermon!!! :p ;) )

Re: Is it just me?

This is a great thread.

In general, I agree that a lot of what fireman57 mentions has to do with being a generational thing. I see it in my kids' friends (20's), the lack of social skills because of such a severe lack of personal interaction and actual conversation. I think there is also a general lack of respect all around in younger people. Yeah, I'm shocked too when I hear my father coming out of my mouth! Out in public, I hold the door for anyone and everyone no matter of age, sex race or anything else. You should see some of the looks I get, a lot af people are stunned and don't know what to make of it. It's a blast.

After hanging around here for a few years, I've come to realize how much I don't know. That's why I only offer advice and share knowledge when I'm absolutely sure I know what I'm talking about. I don't want to steer anybody the wrong way with bad information.

My advice to anyone here new or old is to be respectful and appreciate all the people who really know their stuff and are willing to take the time to share it freely. Practice the Golden Rule and see how it is returned to you.

Re: Is it just me?

Like this site too for work has reminded me that if I don't respond to callouts breakdowns we loose $ 30.00 a second . Seeing new and fresh boaters problems is fun to try and help and work is just work and hobbies are fun
