Is This A Problem, Or Normal?

RE: 1975 Chrysler 90 HP 3-cylinder, Motorola ignition.

With the spark plugs out, carbs and intake off of the motor, motor in forward, neutral or reverse (doesn't seem to matter), I rotate the motor, using a socket on the flywheel nut, and can feel (12) places in one revolution where there is a slight resistance. It's equally spaced at 30 degrees apart.

This is the first O/B I've ever worked on. I have no idea if this is normal or an indication of a problem. The lower end has not been removed yet and I'm wondering if these "bumps" are a bad impeller? The motor has not been used in a few decades.

Also thinking it could be a bad main bearing or some hardened fuel on the bearings.

The motor rotates freely otherwise.

Any ideas on this?

WOW! You have a sensitive touch!

The flywheel has two magnets spaced closely together and the alternator stator has 12 poles. You are probably feeling the flywheel magnets passing the 12 alternator poles. Double check with a very thin feeler gauge to be certain that rust on the magnets or poles is not rubbing.

I would spray a bunch of fuel mix into the carbs and cycle the engine over. Make sure to ground out the plug wires. Crank the engine over until you see fuel mix blowing out the spark plug holes. By this time, you'll know your internal organs are nice and lubed up. I would check and see if you're still feeling the resistance as stated before. If this doesn't correct the problem, you'll at least know your rings and bearings are lubed up after sitting so long:cool:

Frank,

That may be it. I'll pull the flywheel and check it. Thanks.

I needed some input and ideas before putting the reeds, intake and carbs back on.

Zephr,

I squirted down the cylinders and crankcase pretty well with TC-W oil. Then rotated it by hand many times. Then repeated the process.

If and when it finally starts, it's going to smoke like crazy.
