Re: Is this true?

Fly Rod, I don't drink, and can't pass that test! Never could!

This is obviously a very emotional topic! Seems like everyone agrees something should be done, but what do we do? Teaching responsibility is a tough thing to do. I agree that is what needs to be done, but there are some that just don't get it, no matter how you try, it still comes down to a personal choice.

My parents were the best parents a kid could ever have. Taugh us kids how to work, how to clean up after ourselves, how to respect authority, how to love our God and country, but in the end, it came down to a personal descision - what were we going to do with all we were taught.

Now, back to the topic, how do we best deal with people that insist on putting others in harms way by wanting to enjoy their freedoms and have a drink or two, then getting into what has now become a lethal weapon?

Although I do not drink and would not have a problem with a car that was equipped with one of these gizmos, I do not think that I should bear the expense. Okay, so do we charge the alcohol manufacturers? Is it their fault that people abuse the priviledges they are given? I don't think so?

Now, let's say we make every one that is convicted of DUI buy one of these. Do they come in for regular tests to make sure they are working? What is the person borrows someone else's car? What if it was the first time they ever drove drunk? What if, what if. Man, there are a lot of what if's?

Not really any clear cut answers to me, but that doesn't mean we should stop trying. In the meanwhile, if you see someone driving under the influence, report them - or as someone said earlier, follow them home and beat them like a redheaded step-shild. Well, I don't know about that, but beat them!

Its a good thing Bush has an armada of vehicles just in case falls off the wagon.

"I'm not proud of that (his DD conviction). I made some mistakes. I occasionally drank too much, and I did that night. I learned my lesson."
(Nov 2 2000)

If aliens ever land and they demand to be taken to your leader, I think their first impression will be: "MORON"!

;-)

Re: Is this true?

I don't think such a system will come into use anytime soon, too many ways around it. Unless they installed it free of charge in every vehicle and engineered it to be tailored to the drivers of the vehicle so as not to be fooled by someone elses breath, and made it so it could not be disconnected, there are too many ways around it. I think it is a good idea to try to limit the use of vehicles by drunk drivers, but this isn't it. In the end, unless alcohol is banned and/or eliminated, the problem will always exist. I have always thought it was kind of funny how society is worked up over drug use when we have a liquer store on every corner. Alcohol causes more problems than all other drugs combined, everyone knows it, but nothing is done about it. 9 times out of 10, alcohol is the first substance kids try, because dad has a bunch in the fridge or under the counter. We can teach responsibility and all that until we turn blue in the face, but as long as the problem is available at the convenience store, and you have to drive to get it, the problem will always exist. All we can do is watch out for the drunk driver and stay as far away as we can.

Don't get me wrong, I tip a beer on occasion, but it is rare. Back in the good ol' days I got rip roarin' drunk all the time, and the car was driven a few times. It makes me sick even thinking about it, but those few times were out in the middle of nowhere so I would have been the only fatality. I have learned though, and I won't even drink more than two beers in a sitting, and I have no desire to get drunk. I wish more people could learn, nothing more pathetic than a 40 year old person drunk off their arse acting like a 20 year old.....

Re: Is this true?

I'm kinda getting in a little late on this one. I too was a hard drinker a few years back. I realized that I had a daughter to take care of and had to cut the d&d out. I still drink, I get tore up like nobodies business sometimes too, althougth only 1-2 times a year. I make sure I am where I am gonna stay when I don't stuff like that and that everyone else is being responsible also. Don't give me any crap about 1 beer affects my judgement TOO MUCH! That cup of coffee or Dr. Pepper you are drinking changes your bodies chemistry also.

As a little side joke:

I'm a member of DAMM:
Drunks Against Mad Mothers

Re: Is this true?

I think the breath ignition makes sense for those who've previously had DUI's but not for the rest of us.
