On a manual Jack Plate how do you know when you have it set right. It is on a 1986 Ranger 390 with a 175 Evinrude

To expand on what JB said. You need a tach and a GPS to optimize the set-up. Start with the antiventilation plate at or just above the hull bottom. Make a trial run noting speed and RPM at max trim. Raise it up and repeat test. Always make sure the motor is pumping water, however, normally the motor will ventilate before it stops pumping.

One thing to consider. Sometimes when you maximize height of the OB, the speed may not be maximized. I have found that dropping the motor down a bit from max lift allows more trimming which will increase performance.

Re: jACK pLATE

I just picked up a 16 foot baja with no power plant on it. The boat is clean and strong with no windshield. I have a jack plate I plan on using and had a couple other questions.

When sealing the bolt holes do I want to put a bead around the whole jack plate? I have a 99 evinrude 200 I plan on putting on. I bought a transom plate to give it something to spread the load. Should I just make a second plate for the bottom two bolts?

Normally you would run the caulk around the perimeter of the transom plate. It will not keep water out, but will look better. Make sure the thru bolts are well siliconed, as you need a seal there.

I have a 16' Avenger with a 135HP Merc V6 on it. It has plenty of power, speed and danger. I would think a 200HP motor on that Baja would increase the danger significantly. Does the Baja have a max HP rating?
