Re: Jerks on TV. Whatsup?

I can't stand any of the crime dramas my wife watches. I either have to get lost in the computer or leave the room when they're on. Just too unrealistic, irritating, and IMO, full of bad acting. Today I accidentally saw a little bit of an old episode of Ironside (remember Raymond Burr?). Even though I don't like that show, the thing that struck me was that at least people from that era could act.

To be honest, I spend the majority of my TV time on the local PBS station. Some pretty amazing stuff on there.

My rant was about the personalities being written in to specific characters. It is not a rant about TV.

Those arrogant remarks about not watching are completely ignorant of when and why I am watching TV. They are offensive. Hobble around in my moccasins for a while before you offer advice.

you're thinking about the shows and the characters after you watch the show, and you're talking about them on a forum and maybe elsewhere-And,you'll most likely continue to watch, just to see if these characters get your goat again...That's what the producers want!

I can't stand the "crime" shows on TV. It is nothing like real police work goes, which probably only bugs me lol. I can't even stand to watch them for 5 mins. The only show I like, which I think is the most true to life police show, is Southland.

I just get on iBoats all the time too!

Try processing a crime scene like a burglary while the victim, who just watched a CSI:Miami marathon, is looking over your shoulder the whole time. Even when I find latent prints, they complain because it takes more than an hour to get the prints examined and run through the computer. They think I am BS'ing them when I tell them 4-6 weeks is the norm due to backlog. Can't win.

A stand-up comedian (can't remember who) once joked that shows like CSI made him think their was semen at every crime scene...lol.

I make a game of watching TV police shows by seeing if I can spot all the lawsuits the characters would rack up in real life.

You guys need a hobby or do some work on your boats... TV is almost all entertainment. So are movies. The human species likes complete packages... The best selling movies are not ones that make you think afterward... You don't really believe Star Wars was real? Of course not.. So relax and do some upgrades on the boat and enjoy the last of winter... Spring is almost here. I know, I get to start my seasonal allergy meds soon...

Re: Jerks on TV. Whatsup?

I watch a lot of TV. Until recently I watched little fictional drama; mostly nonfiction and some British comedy.

Now I suddenly discover that lead characters in many popular shows are insufferable jerks.

NCIS: The DiNozzo character is a bully and a terrible jerk. If he worked for me it wouldn't last two days before I either beat him senseless or threw him out an upper story window (or both). Gibbs can be insensitive, too.

House: Another jerk seriously distorts how a good physician treats colleagues and patients.

Doc Martin: Another bad, bad example of physician PR.

None of those characters would survive a week in the real world, and I haven't even looked at other drama and crime shows.

Are young people likely to see them as role models??

LOL Who in their right mind would idolize DiNozzo? He is supposed to be a jerk, it's his character!!! Same with House! C'mon, you think Barney would last as a real deputy? C'mon man! LOL

Good grief, I can't believe this is a thread.

i could do w/o tv. i barely know what show or who (which actors) your talking about.
i watch the news (if you can call it that)/propaganda while i have lunch and dinner. even that disgusts me and i end up over on cspan watching our idiot elected officials try to fix the unfixable. at least that's real. other than that, i find everything else a waste of time. gripes me i have to pay $25 a month (bottom tier cable, 22 channels) to see even that.
as for the young seeing tv as real. i think they do and it's a threat imho.

better to spend time on iboats. at least that makes ya think (could learn something) a little..

Re: Jerks on TV. Whatsup?

About 80-90% of the TV I watch is educational stuff on the History, Military or Discovery type channels. My problem is that they run the same shows over and over; I can only enjoy the story of Midway so many times before I start nit picking the trivial historical errors. I also get a kick out of seeing shots of my Uncle Tom almost every time they show flight deck activity, even when the story was about some battle or on some CV other than when/where the shots were actually taken.

When I watch "fairy tale" stuff I expect characters like John Wayne or Roy Rogers to demonstrate the best qualities of storybook heroes. They are always admirable, honest, fair and, above all, kind to all except the guys in the black hats.

I do enjoy the writing, acting and direction of shows like NCIS, House and Doc Martin. I would just like the DiNozzo, House and Martin characters to be more like the gentlemen who shaped my view of storybook heroes those many years ago.

I agree. It is television. There's an off button too...

I do not understand how anyone can watch them sitcoms, they are terrible. I basically watch true stories, the news, animal migrations, blue oceans etc:. My #1 show is mystery diseases, very educational and had given me a perspective on communicating with my doctors, you need a doctor that thinks out side of the box.

I have a TV in my woodworking man cave. I put it on FOX news and mostly listen. All the network sitcoms are too ubelievable for me to watch. When I do watch it, I watch mostly the Discovery channels.

See, there is your problem. You listen to what you should be watching. You ever seen those hotties on FNC? I don't care if they're telling me the moon is made of green cheese, they are hot!

The times, they are a changin' I guess.
The guy I can't stand too much is on the new Hawaii 5-0 series. It's James Caan's son who plays 'Danno'......very poor choice for that role. My wife likes the show but I generally walk when it comes on, mostly due to this little guy.
I don't know why the tough talking, abrasive characters produce successful T.V, but it is probably the same thing that compels people to watch the 'real' (?) life drama from reality T.V
My two bits.

I hear ya, but I gotta watch what I'm doing,,,sure don't want to lose a finger or two to a hottie that I can't touch. And just maybe if the occassion would arise, it would be nice to have all those fingers :D
