Jet Boats Are Sexy but Loud.

I'm always at amazed when I see a loud Jet boat Sporting a Big Roster tail with a Sexy Paint Job and Big motor with Big Header Pipes. I tell my wife that type of boat will be my mid life crisis boat as well being boat #2.

So do they wear Eye Plugs when running those things? Also Jet boats seems to be late model late Seventies or early Eighties. Never seen a fairly new one.

They rank right up there along side PWC's, except I can see the PWC being fun to play on.

its not just jet boats, propulsion is independent. There are tons of those 70's/80's open engine speed boats. Huge v8 stuffed into a tiny hull with either a v drive or jet.


Its a sports car on water, its sole purpose is to go fast. No different than a guy taking a weekend racer to the track occassionally.

I like the old Jets, The olds 455's, Ford 460s, and Chevy 454s spinning at 4500-6500 rpms is like music to my ears, but there is a time and a place for everything. I dont see a need for a bass boat that you cat even ski off off beacuse it has no freeboard, or the 21 foot cuddys that no one actually sleeps on, but each have their place with their owners and you have to respect that. Anyone who starts the "Well the way I boat is ok but there is no NEED to _____" Guess what, same goes for your ____ use. Conqour and Divide and next thing you know all lakes will be off limits. Just like you can say there is no need to go 70 miles an hour, it can be said that you dont NEED to go fishing, you will not starve to death, there is no NEED to go on a sunset cruise, it just polutes the lake and the air...."

All of our boating is by chioce and recreational. As long as its done in a safe manner I support ALL boating types. It floats I am ALL for it. Even the ones that run on air!

I don't know if they do wear plugs, but speaking from experience: I worked in a punch press operation in my teens with no protection---before OSHA regs---and now live with a significant hearing loss from it. They really should. Loud noise damage is cumulative.

I need to use closed captions for voices on TV shows, but on the plus side, I don't hear a lot of crap either and it's easy to tune out the wife's complaints. LOL

I know more than one Jet boat that has the old military Helecopter Com systems. Noise cancling headphones with mics so you can talk amonst each other.... Some two some 4 head sets. You can even wire in the engine alarm tones!

They're testosterone boosters, like viagra on the water. I've told my wife for years I'm getting one and wear those leopard skin spandex speedos and mirrored sunglasses, try to look like Don Johnson on Miami Vice...she says I'll have to find another date, so I'll just muddle around in my big green jon boat!

I will admit that I have always desired to have an ex Top Fuel nitro methane burning engine in my backyard.

Fully functional on a test stand so I can fire it up when the neighbors dog barks too much, etc.

We had one when i was a kid out in southern california around 1976. 455 olds. We did lots of fishing from it withdad mom and me all with a line out. Mostly used for skiing. We had a small triangular frame above and behind engine with tow hook.

That is the boat that got me hooked on boat.

No radio. No built in or electronic anything. Brought a big cooler on with us and the dog and on the water all day long.

NO EARPLUGS!!!

Jet boats have their purpose, as does every other sytle of boat (except pontoons, blech! ). I have a friend with a blown 454 making over 650HP on a 22ft Horizon w/Berkley jet. They are loud, but once you are moving, most of the sound is directed behind you, so it's not *quite* at ear plug levels, imo. They are made for smaller inland lakes where there is little to no chop so that they have room to open them up. They have little regard for water depth since they don't require much. It's no different than owning a Corvette, because it's not useful for doing much other than going fast/handling. The jet boats don't typically have large fuel tanks, so going 10mi. offshore isn't much of a concern.

they do have extremely shallow drafts and produce almost no wake on plane, so they actually make great ski boats. As long as you leave the jet-o-vader or place diverter down, the rooster tail is non-existent and is largely just for show. It does help some boats gain a few mph's, but most of the time people leave the rooster tails up for attention or warding off people (jet skis) following too closely.

Normally they are far louder to the person watching them, then they are to the driver and passenger riding in them, the sound goes behind you as your moving along at 65 mph...you have to remember the noise coming out the header are moving away from you. I have been on a few jets, and they really were not that loud, now skiing behind them is a whole different matter!

It is the same thing as flying first class in an airplane, you really don't hear the engines because they are behind you..

I want to reiterate something, this has nothing to do with jet or I/O or inboard. Exhaust is exhaust regardless of drive system. Just depends on whether they use a baffle or tips, over the transom dry, thru transom wet, even a Catalyst is changing the exhaust note these days.

Also, I have through transom with no mufflers. Meets AZ state standard, but also very normal where I boat.

Yes, you can buy new Jet boats from many CA and AZ custom builders. They can also install a muffler or exhaust tip on any one of them if desired. A Jetavator or Place Diverter cause the rooster and they are options.

Jets are popular in AZ and CA (Northwest too) due to shallow water operation on the Colorado off of the lakes. Lake use has carried over from that.

High horsepower jets are extremely fun to operate and when you cannot be choosy on your path, like retrieving a down skier in shallow water, they are a benefit to safety.

Dad didn't want his little kiddo getting burned on them exposed pipes.
