jet boats with big block power & over the transom headers are awesome-I have always wanted one. maybe not practical but FUN. I think everyone (but some old Pharts) wants a faster boat.

Different strokes for different folks-if they are too loud for ya go get in your Hyundai and drive 5 mph under the speed limit!

one of my fondest memories was seeing a guy firing up his boat and being soo load that a 10 year old boy swimming close to the ramp screamed like a little girl it scared him so much!-the thought of it still makes me laugh!

Some of the responses in here are hilarious!!!

Jet boat propulsion has zero to do with exhaust noise. The engine exhaust configuration combined with how strong the exhaust pulse determines how loud the engine is.

Where you are in relation the the exhaust note will also play a part. The jet boats running over the transom and "un muffled" headers will be loud enough to annoy most ear drums. Zoomie headers like you find on a dragster are down right loud!

To guys like me, a well built high performance engine with no mufflers is music to the ears. There's a saying that goes "If it's too loud, you're too old!"

to answer the question of earplugs. no that is why they are going so fast so they dont have to here it. but yes it is music to my ears and to muffle it would be a crime.

I would like to take a ride in a Jet boat before I make a decision to get one. This decision will not come soon. Maybe I can bum a ride in one some day.

Way back when I was in high school, one of my friend's dad had one of those sleek shells with a huge 454 with straight pipes and the jet drive. Loved riding in that boat. Don't remember it being overly loud when you are flying across the lake, got the engine behind you and the wind whipping past kind of makes the engine lose a bit of its volume...

went up to Maumee River here in NW Ohio yesterday....a guy with an Eliminator-type tunnel cat drove by doing about 40. Very nice and had never seen it on the river before. Sure enough, as soon as he rounds the bend and is out of my sight I hear the thing roar and off he went. Came back by about 20 minutes later...crusing at 40 again....dangit....lol

When I was about 10-11 years old my dad had one for a few years just as a toy I think, as we also had a big 27' cruiser as the "main" boat. It was a Tahiti jet with a 455 olds dual carbs and a tunnel ram,chrome straight headers, a "trim-a-trick" rooster tail adjuster, big foot shaped gas pedal. Also had the guages in chrome pipes that came up out of the bow and angled back toward the driver. 4 people and a couple of skis was about max capacity, never was that loud while driving in it, but was a beast if you were on the beach or skiing behind it. I will try and find some pics of that boat it was super cool in 1978. You had better stay close though cause that thing drank gas like it was free.

Jet boats have their purpose, as does every other sytle of boat (except pontoons, blech! ). I have a friend with a blown 454 making over 650HP on a 22ft Horizon w/Berkley jet. They are loud, but once you are moving, most of the sound is directed behind you, so it's not *quite* at ear plug levels, imo. They are made for smaller inland lakes where there is little to no chop so that they have room to open them up. They have little regard for water depth since they don't require much. It's no different than owning a Corvette, because it's not useful for doing much other than going fast/handling. The jet boats don't typically have large fuel tanks, so going 10mi. offshore isn't much of a concern.

they do have extremely shallow drafts and produce almost no wake on plane, so they actually make great ski boats. As long as you leave the jet-o-vader or place diverter down, the rooster tail is non-existent and is largely just for show. It does help some boats gain a few mph's, but most of the time people leave the rooster tails up for attention or warding off people (jet skis) following too closely.

I like my old school zone pontoon, To each his own; and speaking of own, its paid for.

Dont ever let the nay sayers scare you away from a REAL boat trust me i am a proud owner of aa 77 hawaiian jet/drag boat and yes it has huge basset racing headers OVER the hull lol thats what its all about dont worry about gas just take it out and let everyone stare as you back it in and when you fire that thing up you will smile from ear to ear but thats not the best get out and smash that gas pedal and let that big block scream big block is a must have you dont take these boats out with little kids just you and the wife or girl friend and let all those haters stare and listen cheers man hope you join the few and the proud jet boaters lol

I saw one on Craig's list and a buddy and me had been talking about some shallow river fishing. Price wasn't too bad, but the guy selling it wouldn't really answer my questions. Don't know why but went to see it anyway. Wasn't what said on the few questions he answered. Bought it anyway, for half of what he was asking. 60 hrs in 7 years on a new 350 OMC engine, dented hull, and it's double hull (now what). His Dad had used it a lot in Hell's canyon, and that's where his 60 hrs came from too. I'm redoing it now, and does anybody know how I can muffle it. Straight pipes to just below the water line with the water being the muffler. Fine trolling, but lousy planing.

Don't be fooled by these jet boats. If they have the older berkley jet drives, they aren't very fast. I had a 17 foot jet boat with a berkley drive, and a 365hp, olds 455 engine in it. Which was re-manufactured. Could never get it past 42mph. Same goes for all the jet boats i've ridden in. The older berk jet drives are junk.

From what i experienced and was told when your idling it's loud but when you driving it's no big deal because the noise is behind you and you have the wind whipping at you in front so it's not that bad.

Of course, some of those 'haters' actually DO hate you because of the godawful noise, and are searching the parking lot looking for nails to put under your trailer tires...

I like fast boats and have owned a couple jet boats (still have one currently), but idiots with straight dry pipes are just that, idiots. No, the extra noise is not giving you more power, and no, the majority of people do not like to hear it buzzing around the lake hour after hour.
