Re: Jet Boats Are Sexy but Loud.

Last time I was out this older couple had one.. Beautiful boat.. Loud as anything...
Of course being the gear head I am I had to go slobber over it. Had duel carbs and the biggest dang tunnel ram I ever seen:eek:..
I asked him what was the mileage on something like that??? He said pedal to the floor to point B.... Then 3/4 to point A.. He wasn't really sure but it drank fuel:redface:...
Told the wife I want one.... She said OKAY, but what are we going to do with it... I said look cool and **** off all the people with 5 kids on their pontoon boat:D:p... OKAY

From what i experienced and was told when your idling it's loud but when you driving it's no big deal because the noise is behind you

The speed of sound is 1,126 ft per second . :)

I doubt you can outrun that in a boat.

If smoking crater or anyone else can tell me how to quiet it down, that I can afford, let me know. The pipes are under water at a troll or sitting, but not at a plane. I won't mind the extra power and speed, but silent is nice also. Plus it'll surprise the heck out of a few people. I am thinking about putting a 45 deg elbow right behind the transom and lowering them to below the jet. Not sure what damage that will do, but I'm hoping someone will tell me first.

It isn't really an issue of "outrunning" the sound. The sound is shot out behind you, so you don't hear the brunt of it.

As far as not being fast...there is plenty of torque in a big block engine, and you lose a lot of the grunt to cavitation, so just swap out the impeller to something a little less steep, and get more top end, and less hole shot, and you can get 60-70 mph pretty easy.

My dads old boat did 60 on the water, and still had plenty of bite for pulling up skiers. This was a 1976 model 455, so probably in the 350 hp range. I don't recall it ever bogging down.

Has anyone here ever done 60 to 80 mph on a boat and find all the sound behind you. I find that impossible. Add the motor noise along with the wind turbulance in your ears....HUH?. I still can't hear.

Sexy is sleek, granted....and sometimes silent.

back in the day a buddy had a jet boat with a chromed 455 Buick ,tunnel ram with nitros, over the transom headers. about 650hp 78mph.
never could get the nos to work right -one night about 2AM after the bar had closed asked me to hould the timing light while his "mechanic" adjusted the timing. The headers were glowing bright orange . Yes it was loud.

once on the lake we had 3 punks on a jet ski fly by too close to the beach and spray us. We hopped in the jet boat and ran them down- hit the jet-o -vator and knocked them off the jet ski with a 40ft high-100+ foot long rooster tail. :D never saw them again.

Does anybody else think it's funny that jets are being painted this way? This is about engine stuff, not drive stuff . . .

You guys need to join us at Havasu for just one weekend. I love silence, but a good 'ole Hydrocarbon Fest is pretty dang cool too.

+1 I couldn't have said it better myself, I would love to have a Hot Boat but the wife has made it clear she wants no part of speed on the water, and if she isn't a part of it then I don't want it either..........right now!! I guess I have to just live with the captain's call for awhile.

In her defense she prefers riding sportbikes with me, I am a former AMA Pro Road racer so go figure, she wants nothing to do with going 90mph on the water but has no issue riding the back of a FZR1000 at 90mph and sliding the rear end, god I love her.

IMO, loud for speed - think race track - is awesome. Loud for look at me is dumb. No different from motorcycles. My Suzuki DL1000 (1000 cc v twin) is stealthy silent, and can out run any of the loudest, most obnoxious v-twins out there. My 200 Opti is still relatively quiet, and can still outrun most of the loud look at me boats, if I so choose. I'd rather win with time slips than a db meter.

Don't be fooled by these jet boats. If they have the older berkley jet drives, they aren't very fast. I had a 17 foot jet boat with a berkley drive, and a 365hp, olds 455 engine in it. Which was re-manufactured. Could never get it past 42mph. Same goes for all the jet boats i've ridden in. The older berk jet drives are junk.

You mean the older Berkeley drives like the 12JC on the back of my boat that does 77mph? Yep complete junk....

Re: Jet Boats Are Sexy but Loud.

Growing up my dad had 15'-18' not sure Carlson Rayson Craft Hull V-Drive sporting 520 cu. inch big block. Some of my fondest memories were in that boat as a kid. It ran over the transom headers and I learned 80% of my mechanical skills helping my dad work on it. Just reading this post makes me wanna call the guy who bought it and resurect (sp?) it. But beyond all that, Just because you don't like that style boat doesn't give you the right to bash it or state your biased opinion. I mean I think a walk around whaler style boat is completely useless but I don't get on every post I see about one and give my biased opinion I just respect the owners choice and enjoy the comments...

(Had to join this thread after several months away.)

Engine noise has nothing to do with drive mechanics, as many posters have said. Ask anyone at our lake about "the obnoxious boat" and they'll know the one you mean -- a large auto-type engine with no muffler, headers over the transom. It will awaken any sleeping baby in the township when it starts. BTW - it's a traditional prop-driven boat that can't even get to full power on our small inland lake (approx 1-1/4 mile diameter).

A couple years ago we traded in a '94 jetboat for a 2007 jetboat. Our new[er] one has a good muffler and is much quieter, plus it meets the Extra Low Emissions standards. It's a 16' 4-seater. Yes, it can go fast, and I've pulled skiers, 2 or 3 tubes at a time, etc. We also like to idle around the lake in the evenings while talking about our day, not up to planing speed at all. It's a good, general-purpose boat that we could afford.

Every loud woman that I have known was obnoxious, and not particularly sexy at best, regardless of how hot she might have looked. Same for loud boats and for that matter, any other unnecessarily loud item.
