I ahve a johnson 9.5 hp, model 9R-73B. It overheats and there is no water flow. The water pump looks good. Is there a thermostat or something else that may restrict or stop water flow?

Thanks.

Re: Johnson 9.5 Overheats

My 9.9 johnson had the same problem. It turned out to be the copper water tube which protruded into the water pump. The tube had been straighten out a bit on dissassembly and when it was put back together the tube would bottom out on the botton of the pump housing preventing any water from entering the tube. Check this out with measurements and the fix it to cut of the required length off the end of the tubing. good luck

Hi jwmcnic, I was wondering if you use this in fresh or salt water. Either way, there is a thermostat in the motor, it is located under a round cover on top of the cylinder head. The 9.9 is a little different design, but you could have that same problem. The head gasket could be leaking, you may have to change that. I would start in these areas after you have checked the waterpump.
