Hi everybody, new here and have a 1963 Johnson 28HP Super Seahorse I am going to use on my little 10' GW Invader Speedboat.I ordered a new impeller and seals but when I took the bottom end off my wear plate has alot of wear and so does the pump housing.I have unable so far to find a pump housing for the early 28HP or a wear plate..If someone can direct me to where I can find one that would be great. Also is there a chance it will run OK with just the new impeller and some wear on the housing and plate...Motor runs beutiful otherwise so I do not want to mess it up with overheating.is there anyway to make a new wear plate maybe and maybe smooth the housing? Thanks and please help...Bruce

the water pump kit comes with a new wear plate.

Your impeller housing is metal correct?

Repair kit with housing from any authorized BRP dealer is part #0379774. I see some on ebay search for "379774".

If you just want the housing alone, it's part #0303831.

Thanks, paid 35.00 buy now for the whole kit and if anyone else needs one he has one kit left after I purchased mine.Seems to be a good price...I almost should just buy both as they are free shipping too but can only afford one....Bruce

That stuff is all available from any Evinrude dealer. However, you probably got a better price on e-bay.

pump housing is 303831
plate is 303866

EDIT: Heck yes you got a better deal. The list price for the housing is $71.40 and the plate is $32.13.

Re: Johnson Impeller Housing wear

One other question if you guys can tell me..With the bottom end removed for the pump replacement can I start the motor without harming anything for a short time..I want to check some other things on the motor that require a temporary startup.Does not need to run for more than a minute or so to do this.Parts will not be here till next week to put it back together and would like to get a jump on a couple other minor things..Thanks

Be careful of a worn housing. They can start to develop small nicks that start cutting the rubber:

Leaving your imperler looking like this:

Wow. That must be a salty?

You wouldn't think so by looking at it, but yeah. entire outboard corroded from the paint in. I have seen housings that are worse, with razor sharp edges, the one pictured isnt even that bad.
