I found this post a few minutes ago:

"Re: Steering Cable removal

. . . . You remove the steering link. . . . . The cable has to withdraw straight out the left side for that entire length. Usually that requires unbolting and swinging the engine by a lifting eye threaded into the flywheel."

I see. To have any chance of fixing my sticking cables, I lift my 483 pound engine into the air with a special hoist after affixing a special eye hook to my flywheel. A cinch. I'm on it now.

Sheesh.

It all depends how much distance you have. If the splashwell is wide, you might not have to move the motor. A narrow splashwell, eat your Wheaties topped with some Popeye brand spinach. Or raise the motor if it can't be slid to port to clear the end of the steering cable. I wish boating was always easy.

WOW I forgot that post. I just yanked them 5 inches out, greased them, put them back in and forgot about it. I've only been on the lake about 10 times since that post. I hardly ever get to use my boat it seems. It's 18 years old and looks new. Garaged whole time. But now I'm determined to do something. I'll just hire a mobile marine mechanic unless a standard engine puller will work. My flywheel is 6' feet in height off the ground.

If you got 5 inches of the cable out, maybe just shifting the motor a little to one side might give the needed clearance. The mind is the first thing to go, KVH.:watermelon:
