Just bought a boat in the 70's with a 165 omc in it. I bought it for the trailer. The guy told me it runs problem is...... How do you hook it to a hose? Figured if it runs someone might need the engine.

I'm assuming that you can't use the muffs (no drive or something). You can hook up a water line directly to the thermostat housing. There is a hose running along the manifolds all the way from the transom to the thermostat housing. Take that hose off of the housing and connect there.

There is a drive but it doesnt have holes like a mercruiser or a outboard at the bottom. It looks like it sucks up water from the back of the trim plate"not sure what its called"

Welcome aboard:

You've got an OMC electric Shift Stringer outdrive. You need to either submerge the drive (like completely) or utilize a hose adapter on the the trunions like so:

Muffs will not work.

I'm glad you just bought it for the trailer. They haven't made the stringer drive in years so you can probably find a buyer for it as parts are getting harder and harder for people to locate. It's a good drive. it just isn't made anymore. Same goes for the engine if it is a Ford (distributer cap in the front of the engine). People are always looking for parts for them so that has value too.

LOL - ya' have to be a little crazy to be a Stringer owner. Part out that drive and you'll make your money back in spades. If it all runs well, give her a whirl on the water. I actually really like the drive even with all it's peculiarities.

O yeah its getting parted out I'm amazed at what the parts are selling for on Ebay. It also has a new trim motor and gear assembly on the front of the motor.

Re: Just bought a 165 OMC

Before you go out and buy a new truck with the hopeful profits from parting that out, I will caution you.

people have things LISTED for high prices on Ebay, that doesnt necessarily mean they are selling for those prices. I have several parts at reasonable prices listed on there and some months they dont even get 10 views, And I am not selling the obscure things either. I have ball gears, and shift springs that have been listed for months, and you can forget about getting 800 bucks for that vertical driveshaft.

like said above, they are not the desired drive and there are less and less peeps willing to work with them.

yes, if you throw on some ball gears for 20 bucks they will be gone, but dont think you will be getting the prices listed on some websites.

that manifold will probably go fast though

Aint this the truth. There a lot of old stringer parts on Ebay with high AND low prices that dont move. Whatever you plan on posting, look up the sale history of that item and you will see what I am talking about. All I have to say is to not overlook the option of adding a "best offer" option on your auctions just so you can sell it at all.

Re: Just bought a 165 OMC

Like the other guys suggest,Take it apart and list it,just don't expect it to make you rich.
The year?? Look on the outside of the transom. It might have a bunch of letters stammped in the fiberglass or a metal sticker with a bunch of letters and numbers. That will have the year of the boat, and will probably be the year of the motor.

Re: Just bought a 165 OMC

lol I was hardly expecting a new truck but It would be nice to to get the trailer for free. I would imagine I could get a 300 or 400 for the engine. and a couple hundred for the outdrive. I have other boats i need new parts for lol.

Re: Just bought a 165 OMC

it looks like you hooked the garden hose to the water pump heater connection, not tee'd into the thermostat housing. I doubt your impeller was getting water that way. You want to change the impeller on any used boat anyway, but I suspect it's pretty melted. Maybe not. Doesn't much matter if you are parting it. Anyone buying the drive will throw a new impeller in.

Runs nice. Hopefully the parts can keep someone else boating reasonably. That 250 Chev was popular in the Mercruiser 165 trim in the early to mid 70's as well as OMC so mention Mercruiser in any ads.

That wont be a problem at all, especially with a good running engine.

that lower unit by itself you should be able to get a couple hundred for, especially when someones breaks this spring. The control unit will have some value as well.
