Hello All,

I own a boat, but I went on a charter boat this weekend and fished for stripers in the Boston Harbor. The captain had 2 setups, each with a Penn 309 conventional reel, a 6-7' rod, umbrella rigs, and this lead core line, that I had never seen before. It was color coded to let you know how much line was let out. Positive it was this stuff:

I'm basically going to purchase the exact same setup, and fish the exact same way during the times/tides/moons he told me to. I did not however ask what pound test he had, it was pretty thick....

He said he has caught 2 - 40 inch stripers on 1 umbrella rig and the angler had a hell of a time reeling it in, with no line breakage. I don't anticipate catching anything like that, but I could pull up a fat cow over 40 lbs, but not often...

Which pound test should I buy?

Re: Lead Core Line

Consider using conventional braided line instead. Most down here are using #65 or #80 Power Pro for trolling Stripers anymore.

Re: Lead Core Line

Lead core comes in 18,27 and 36 pound test.
For trolling stripers,I would get a 300 foot (10 colors) roll of 36 pound test.
But it is not quite so simple. You will need a lot of backing(usually 200 feet of 50 pound test dacron)and about 50 feet of leader, preferably fluorocarbon.
Now here comes the problem.Fluorocarbon, lead line and dacron are all non stretch materials.A big blue or a big striper cow will hit your line like a freight train and if you do not set the slip lightly, you stand to loose all your leadline and your fish.
Good luck!!

Not to mention the fact that 300ft of 36# LC, backing and leader arent going to fit on a 309. You'd need something more like a a 330 GTI and more backing.

The 330 and the 309 have the same line capacity. 350 yds. X #30

The guides in those rods last about 1 season then the ceramics fall out.

I repaired maybe a dozen rod this summer for guys in the club that bought those combos.
