GPS is most accurate. Pitot-style gauges are sometimes not too accurate and don't read at all at slow speeds. I will admit that the one that came on my SS was reading dead on with the GPS at planing speed. I'm not real familiar with the paddle-wheel style ones that work with the fish finders. Never had one. I understand they're pretty good at low speed. My main beef with the pitot style ones are the tube, the pitot, the holes in the transom, the ugly tube on the transom, etc etc. Doesn't seem worth it. I haven't put one back in on my SS.

78 SS 16ft. Johnson 1984 50 hp runs as fast as I want to go in the smaller boat. About 35 ish. I can always get big Bertha my 22 Holiday with the 200 Johnson to go faster. Just kidding. Love the 16 tho and great in the river.

If I can get 30MPH out of it I will be happy,

Is it safe to say that the smaller the engine the better it is on gas ?

( at the same MPH )

Depends alot on what RPM you have to run to equal the same speed.

Re: Lets talk H.P. !

So what causes this condition ?

Correct me if I?m wrong but my understanding is this. A hook can be caused by the way the boat sits on the trailer. If the rollers aren?t on the stringers or aren?t far enough back to the transom, the weight over time will cause the stern to sag. That?s why you see most of the trailers that Starcraft used were a combo of keel rollers and bunks. The bunks also come right back to the transom. To check for hook take a straight edge to the hull and see how much gap you have. Measure from the back to the front along the hull close to the transom. Too much gap will cause your bow to nose in when on plane. You will have too much boat in the water and it will use more fuel and go slower than expected. Trimming the motor up will lift the bow but you might lose traction, from prop cavitation. This could happen in waves or in turns. If you can trim up and you start porpoise you don?t have a bad hook. Oh and don?t run your boat at the edge with a bit of porpoise. Your prop will get pitted and your fellow boaters will know you?re a landlubber. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/landlubber
Hook will act like you have trim tabs set to deep. Might be good to go slow on plane in bad weather, but your not going to get top speed out of your boat.
